Seems underdiscussed. As an Old, I was a liberal in the 2000s. Here's what we were right about:
The 'right' wing today is just the left from 20 years ago. Change my mind
- We said the war in Iraq & Afghanistan was a mistake. Crazy how almost everyone agrees with this now, including Trump & all the populists on the right. Who's still pro-Iraq war? Dick Cheney? David French?
- We said free trade (we called it 'globalization' then) was a mistake. The left was against NAFTA and China entering the WTO, those were always big Republican positions. Does anyone disagree these days?
- We said gay people should be able to marry each other. This was a super-controversial view in the 2000s. What's the approval rating on gay marriage now? Like 70%?
- We said weed should be legalized. This was always a big leftwing position. Today it's legal in 40 states medicinally- including super-red ones- and straight up legal in 24 states
Democrats voted unanimously in the Senate, the only people who didn't vote yes were 2 republicans, it was completely bipartisan and I don't completely blame them at a time where the country was attacked. In the house a single democrat voted against it. Democrats voted majority yes (republicans were almost unanimous) in the Senate for the Iraq War and were split 40-60% in the House.
Bill Clinton signed NAFTA.
Obama, the Clintons, and many on the left were against gay marriage. And republicans were definitely correct when they said it was a slippery slope. We went from "they just want to get married" to pre-teens being given puberty blockers for no health reason and men competing against women in women's sports.
Weed legalization is great, both in terms of freedom and reducing drug related gang violence. I do wonder if it has side effects of reducing productivity and having more people drive under the influence and more dangerous on the roads.
