Whatever, man. I don't have a cause here, I don't care. I'm just calling it the way I see it. How many times have we heard people toss around "Mary Sue" when Luke was exactly as broken a character in TOS? If you don't see the attitude I'm talking about, fine. People have flat out said in this thread they aren't invested when it's a heroine as opposed to a hero.
Both Ren and Rey are crazy powerful, that's the deal. Ren took out Luke, and then wiped out most of the other young Jedi. For whatever reason, they both have a metric ton of raw power, so much power it terrifies Luke Freaking Skywalker. Rey isn't any more powerful than Ren. Laura Dern was OK, kind of a dumb character, and the hair was silly, but why call her a granny? If she was a man would you call her grandpa? Also, did you think Rose was making him do the right thing? She saved him because she loved him. I was pissed because it was a pretty fucking stupid thing to do.
Also also, why is Leia's strength with the Force sudden to you? We know she's a Skywalker. She's had decades to learn. In the expanded universe, she's pretty powerful. In the movies, Luke has said she's strong with the Force. It was a cool idea, although the execution was terrible, she looked like the wicked with of the west.
At the end of the day, it wasn't a great movie. While I really enjoyed TFA, I felt nothing at any point during TLJ, except when Luke marched out alone, and that scene ended up a lot less cool than we deserved.
I just don't see an agenda here. I see more women getting prominent roles, and I see a lot of guys bitching about it. I've spent most of this year absorbing a great deal of anti-feminist literature and while I agree the situation is getting out of control regarding equality of outcome as opposed to equality of opportunity, I don't see a problem with what's happening in film. I don't see an agenda here. Films are driven by profits, and if something isn't working it will change.
Rey and Luke are not in the same ballpark.
Luke had consequences. He gets his ass kicked, he loses a hand, Vader is the one that ends up helping him in the end. We saw him struggling to train with Yoda.
Where is Rey's struggle? Untrained, she beat TRAINED BY LUKE SKYWALKER Ren the first time she picked up a light saber. She and Ren take out like 10 Luke and Snoke trained knights...AND she ends up saving trained Ren. She can fly the falcon, she can speak Wookie, she can use the force, she can beat Luke...there is nothing she can't do in these films.
At least with Luke we saw his development and struggle. Rey has no consequences or struggle, and it's not because she's a girl. It's bad writing.
Lol and how is Rey not anymore powerful than Ren? She beat him in the first movie, she saved him in the 2nd movie, during their force connection--she could see him, but he couldn't see her even though he has a ton more Force experience AND the Skywalker blood, she also recovered before he did and was able to escape in a ship after the light speed kamikaze.
I would totally call a male a grandpa if the movie gave me a purple haired, frail old man, and tried to pass him off as a military commander. I kept waiting for the film to SHOW me why this lady is such a badass, and it never did. Anybody could have done what she ended ended up doing.
Leia is sensitive to the force...that is a big difference from using it to fly through space. I don't want to hear about "what happened in the books or comics". The Leia we know in the films has never actually used the force, and for the first time she does is for her to do some master level jedi shit out of nowhere?
I'm liberal, and a minority, so im not some "angry white guy " , or right winger looking to be offended. Im all for more diversity and equality, but this movie felt like clear pandering to me. I don't think it was THE goal of the film, but it felt like they were willing to sacrifice story and coherence for showing "equality" and girl power...instead instead of just writing a good story with good female characters.
I am not against female characters. I am against shit that doesn't make sense, and shitty characters. They are making lazy, shitty female characters just so they can check off "Strong Female lead" off the checklist
