I agree that fabricated bullshit in service of a cause does more harm than good to that cause, and I think the cause here is a worthy one - making clear the systemic and generational abuse that was done to indigenous peooles in canada.

I guess where I depart from what seems to be your position on this is the level of intentionality. I dont know that calling it a hoax is appropriate. I thibk there was good reason to suspect that some graves may have been discovered and that this message was amplified and spread like wildfire due to the well established dark history of the residential school system. This is understandable to me, how this could happen in the historical context of the residential school system, and that doesn't quite meet the definition of hoax.

The hoax is portraying the residential school system as a deliberate and unvarnished attempt to be cruel. While it's reasonable to argue about it's merits or demerits, it was an attempt to bring primitive people into the modern world for their own good. Maybe it was a failure or had too many abuses, but the Monday morning quarterbacks in the room don't have a genuine clue about what should have been done differently and are really mostly virtue signaling.

In any other time and place in world history the so called indigenous would have just been wiped out or driven to the wilderness and left to die or formally enslaved until they were used up. It's extremely rare that dissimilar cultures, especially when one is significantly less technologically advanced, live side by side in harmony. Far more often than not there is serious conflict that leads to the destruction of the more primitive culture and cruel abuse that makes the problems of the residential school system look like a cloudy day in comparison.

It's fine to address real crimes and abuses that happened but right now we are seeing a lot of twisted history, rumor mongering, and emotional blackmail for the benefit of activist grifters. It's being used to incite left wing nutcases to attack churches based on a false premise. Implementing communist bullshit and promoting blood sucking conmen is not going to fix the past or improve the current state of the world.

But we don't know, because they haven't been dug up. It may be that there are none, it may be that there are a few but not thousands, it may be that there are hundreds or thousands but the nations don't want to dig them up.

They've spend millions of dollars trying to find them. Haven't found shit.
