International Mexican president blames the US for bloodshed in Sinaloa as cartel violence surges

Reality is truly crazier than fiction. So Joaquin secretly worked with the CIA to forge a plan to double cross Mayo in order to help his brother?

There still has to be something deeper that led Joaquin to do this since Ovidio will still face trial and Joaquin will face trial now as well, right? Or do you think the US will quietly, indefinitely postpone those trials and put both into witness protection or CIA agents?

Well with cartels there's a universe of internal politics that will always be hidden so it's totally unpredictable and you just hear rumours and speculation for the most part

El Mayo is a goldmine of intelligence just because he has been a top player for decades. He is far more valuable an asset to authorities than Joaquin and Ovidio. Joaquin is fairly minor compared to his brothers, and was a target for authorities anyway so they probably considered him a worthy sacrifice knowing he'd get a favorable deal for cooperating. Likely getting Ovidio a deal at the same time, and probably getting Los Chapitos a more favorable relationship with US authorities too.

Interesting context here is that one of El Mayo's sons, Vincentillo, was captured years back and testified against El Chapo in order to get a better deal. Now El Chapo's sons have turned in El Mayo apparently to get themselves a better deal.

Probably at the end, Ovidio and Joaquin end up witness protection. Probably El Mayo cuts a deal and throws a bunch of people under the bus to save himself, because he has always been rumoured to cooperate with authorities whenever he's needed to (Lots of rumours about him backstabbing people over history, including El Chapo)

Interesting thing yesterday was the Mexican military launched a big operation to capture El Piyi who was part of the Los Chapitos faction. So it seems the Mexican government is pissed at El Mayo getting caught and is still going after Los Chapitos, even as Los Chapitos may be cutting deals with the US to save their asses.

So remains to be seen if this play pans out for Los Chapitos since they're gonna have the Mexican government and now El Mayo's faction gunning for them. The US probably doesn't mind because if Los Chapitos gets buttfucked in this war there's a good chance they could lure Ivan, the most important of the brothers, into their custody looking for a deal/protection

El Mayo's faction especially was and is fighting a bloody war with CJNG, a powerful rival cartel, so in all this confusion there'll be opportunities for other cartels to expand and take advantage too. There is also a third major faction within the Sinaloa cartel which is run by El Chapo's brother (who recently escaped a major government operation to capture him), and it's unknown where he really falls into this as he is one of the most secretive and low key cartel bosses.

Shit like this is why the cartels are so interesting to follow

My favorite thing ever is when people say that we need to leave the bad guys alone because that means some other bad guy is going to fight for his place.

We just need to let Mexico remain a narco-state, we don’t want to piss off any thugs.

What can the US do while someone like AMLO is in charge?

"He added that there “cannot be a cooperative relationship if they take unilateral decisions” like this. Instead of thanking the U.S. for nabbing Zambada — whose cartel has spread violence and terror across Mexico for decades — Mexican prosecutors have said they were considering bringing treason charges against those involved in the plot"

Lol. When this can is done thanking us he can get back to building the wall and paying for it.

For how long and with what benefits? What fantasy universe devices will be used to make it possible?
It obviously needs to be long enough to mentigate most of the fentanyl and human trafficking. The benefits would be less fentanyl deaths, and less human trafficking. "Devices" can Include additional manning and increased number of perimeter security points. The coast guard have been doing better on the sea, it's time to take care of the land

Mexico has been taken over by cartels. Honestly they need a military operation to wipe that country clean of gang members. USA should just make our border more and more secure to prevent them from coming up.

- Fenatyl cant be controled. I've did a thread about the route. They even go to Alaska

He's right but being right makes them look worse.

Taking in the head of a cartel is always going to lead to warring factions trying to take control of the power vacuum. That's the US's fault for creating that power vacuum.

But what's the alternative? Let the cartels run free so that they don't fight each other? Okay, then you're a narco state that can't police its criminals. You can't stop them from being criminals because they're more powerful than you and you don't want someone else stopping them because you can't maintain peace in their absence.

Mexico's president asks Sinaloa cartel to act 'responsibly' as violence escalates in the north

MEXICO CITY -Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday asked the warring factions of the Sinaloa cartel to act "responsibly" so no one else gets killed, after a week of escalating violence nearly paralyzed the Sinaloa state capital, Culiacan.

Asked by a journalist if he trusted that the cartels would heed his call, Lopez Obrador answered bluntly: "The president of Mexico is always listened to."

"Even by criminals?" pressed the journalist.

"By everyone, more so if one has moral authority," responded the president.

The exchange Friday during the president's morning press briefing is the latest in a series of instances where Lopez Obrador has downplayed the clashes between factions of the Sinaloa cartel.

The president, who leaves office on Sept. 30, has repeatedly refused to confront cartels, laying out various justifications for his "hugs, not bullets" strategy offering opportunities to youths so they won't join cartels.

The latest clashes in Culiacan are the latest example of the violence that continues to plague Mexico, where cartels employ increasingly sophisticated forms of warfare including roadside bombs or IEDs, trenches, home-made armored vehicles and bomb-dropping drones.

The cartels "have to look for other ways, so they do not harm innocent people ... and avoid further loss of life," Lopez Obrador said on Friday. "They also should take care of themselves and their families."

The surge in violence had been expected after Joaquin Guzman Lopez, a son of former Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, landed near El Paso, Texas on July 25 in a small plane with Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada.

Zambada was the cartel's elder figure and reclusive leader. After his arrest, he said in a letter circulated by his lawyer that he had been abducted by the younger Guzman and taken to the U.S. against his will.

Now there appears to be a struggle for power between the remaining sons of El Chapo, known locally as "the Chapitos," and those loyal to Zambada.

As of Thursday, state authorities had reported at least 12 dead, 11 people with gunshot wounds, 20 reports of missing people and 31 cases of car robberies. The actual number of fatalities may be higher since the cartels often pick up their own dead.

Streets in Culiacan appeared empty as schools and businesses remained closed Friday and festivities around Mexican Independence on Sept. 15-16 were officialy canceled by the local government.

What can the US do while someone like AMLO is in charge?
Nothing, but honestly even with other presidents it won’t do much because Mexico is a Latin American country and they just can’t do law and order. We have cartels in America, too and none of that violence. Central American countries don’t have those cartels, and they do have the violence.

We should support them every step of the way, but to think that we can just socially engineer a country we haven’t occupied is hubris.

And before there was the US to blame, there were the Spaniards, and before that it was Huitzilopochtli not having enough sacrificed prisoners.

Having an open border in general is bad enough, but having one with a country openly run by cartels is unconscionable

Why take responsibility for your own problems when you can just blame someone else?

CULIACAN, Mexico (AP) — Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador blamed the United States on Thursday for the surge in cartel violence terrorizing the northern state of Sinaloa which has left at least 30 people dead in the past week.

Two warring factions of the Sinaloa cartel have clashed in the state capital of Culiacan in what appears to be a fight for power. Teams of gunmen have engaged each other and the security forces, and more dead bodies continue to pop up in the city.

On Thursday afternoon, another military operation covered the north of the city with military and circling helicopters.

Traffic was heavy in Culiacan and most schools were open, even though parents were still not sending their children to classes. Businesses continue to close early and few people venture out after dark. While the city has slowly reopened and soldiers patrol the streets, many families continue to hide away, with parents and teachers fearing they’ll be caught in the crossfire.

“Where is the security for our children, for ourselves too, for all citizens? It’s so dangerous here, you don’t want to go outside,” one Culiacan mother told the Associated Press.

On Thursday afternoon, another military operation covered the north of the city with helicopters circling overhead.

The mother, who didn’t want to share her name out of fear of the cartels, said that while some schools have recently reopened, she hasn’t allowed her daughter to go for two weeks. She said she was scared to do so after armed men stopped a taxi they were traveling in on their way home, terrifying her child.

The surge in violence had been expected after Joaquín Guzmán López, a son of former Sinaloa cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán, landed near El Paso, Texas on July 25 in a small plane with Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada.

Zambada was the cartel’s elder figure and reclusive leader. After his arrest, he said in a letter circulated by his lawyer that he had been abducted by the younger Guzmán and taken to the U.S. against his will.

During his morning press briefing on Thursday, López Obrador claimed that American authorities were responsible for the violence because of the capture of Zambada, a wild saga that has puzzled many across the region.

The Mexican populist claimed American authorities “carried out that operation” and that “it was totally illegal, and agents from the Department of Justice were waiting for Mr. Mayo.”

“If we are now facing instability and clashes in Sinaloa, it is because they (the American government) made that decision,” he said.

He added that there “cannot be a cooperative relationship if they take unilateral decisions” like this. Instead of thanking the U.S. for nabbing Zambada — whose cartel has spread violence and terror across Mexico for decades — Mexican prosecutors have said they were considering bringing treason charges against those involved in the plot.

It’s the latest escalation of tensions in the U.S.-Mexico relationship. Last month, the Mexican president said he was putting relations with the U.S. and Canadian embassies “on pause” after ambassadors criticized his controversial plan to overhaul Mexico’s judiciary by requiring all judges to stand for election.

Still, the Zambada capture has fueled criticisms of López Obrador, who has throughout his administration refused to confront cartels in a strategy he refers to as “hugs not bullets.” On previous occasions, he falsely stated that cartels respect Mexican citizens and largely fight amongst themselves.

While the president, who is set to leave office at the end of the month, has promised his plan would reduce cartel violence, such clashes continue to plague Mexico. Cartels employ an increasing array of tactics, including roadside bombs or IEDs, trenches, home-made armored vehicles and bomb-dropping drones.

Last week, López Obrador publicly asked Sinaloa’s warring factions to act “responsibly” and noted that he believed the cartels would listen to him.

But the bloodshed has only continued.
