Rushdie received threats and had to go into hiding but this is as far as I remember the first time he's actually been attacked.

There was a bomb attempt on Rushdie back in the late 80ies. The bomb went off ahead of time while it was being primed, and demolished several floors of a hotel and killed the bomber. He was declared a martyr in Iran.
