Movies Robert De Niro Movie Marathon (Movie #13 Once Upon A Time In America)

I would definitely rather watch Showtime over Flags. Showtime at least had a few good laughs in it.

Flags is probably a lot better then I gave it credit for or maybe I should say discredit for, but i was extremely bored watching it.

The Enforcer as well.

The only thing about Flags that I found interesting was the Adam Beach character and arc. Still a reasonably well shot and acted movie...but the story is put together in a pretty boring way and it isn't actually that interesting a story. A biopic on Adam Beach's character (a real guy) through the war and after would have probably been more interesting. There was one a long time ago but I think Tony Curtis played that character so it is kind of grouped in with John Wayne as Genghis Khan and Mickey Rooney in Breakfast at Tiffany's.

As for The Enforcer...that was the one with Tyne Daly? I kind of liked it. I get it confused with the one with Genevieve Bujold though and I think I liked that one better.

Movie #9 - The Untouchables

Synopsis: After building an empire with bootleg alcohol, legendary crime boss Al Capone (Robert De Niro) rules Chicago with an iron fist. Though Prohibition agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) attempts to take Capone down, even his best efforts fail due to widespread corruption within the Windy City's police force. Recruiting an elite group of lawmen who won't be swayed by bribes or fear, including Irish-American cop Jimmy Malone (Sean Connery), Ness renews his determination to bring Capone to justice

My Rating: 8/10
2 things I really didn't like about this film

1. When Connery gets shot up with the Tommy Gun he gets shot about 8 times yet still crawled and survived long enough to tell Costner where the accountant will be. Just way to unreal for me to believe it could happen.

2. The baby stroller scene. Way too silly and unrealistic for a stroller to go down the steps and not topple over, let alone go in super slow motion while everything else looked in normal speed. Idk I really didn't like that.

All in all a great cast and good story. I felt like it could have been much better though.

There are bad films with de Niro, good films with de Niro, great films with de Niro, genius films with de Niro, and then there's Once upon a time in America, which is in a league of his own.
You see, Mr Secretary... I have a story also, a little simpler than yours. Many years ago, I had a friend, a dear friend. I turned him in to save his life, but he was killed. But he wanted it that way. It was a great friendship. But it went bad for him, and it went bad for me too. Good night, Mr Bailey.

Shame that today we have scores of Nolans and Villeneuves but not a single Leone or Kubrick.

Untouchables was good but I've forgotten most of it.

When are you getting to Ronin. That was pretty good

Watching Ronin tomorrow night. And then I'm gonna knock off all of the films bisex recommended for me. Maybe do all of his films from the 90s this weekend (except Goodfellas & Heat)

I liked Untouchables but mainly because of the cast. There were a few things in the film I wasn't a fan of and to be honest it's a movie I find overrated in terms of ppl putting it near the top for best gangster/crime movies. It would be bottom 10 at best.

My favorite thing about Untouchables is the glorious Ennio Morricone score

Just perfectly captures that 1940’s gangster movie essence.

If it wasn’t for DeNiro it would be pretty boring. He’s the lifeblood and energy of the movie.

Considering how Iwo Jima was suppose to be the story told from the opposite side, Flags should have been told just the same. The main story of who raised the flag ect should have been a side story.

But they made the entire film revolve around that and I just found it quite boring. I couldn't wait to get it over with.

Enforcer was the worst film of the Harry series. Harry and Magnum were the best and honestly the only 2 films in the series I would even want to watch again.

I'm in the minority about Harry as well cause I don't think it's one of his best movies and I wouldn't even put it in my top 10 Clint movies.

Ronin is good. Like a 7.5

I've seen it before. Sean Bean and Leon are great in there I thought. De Niro had his best career in the 90s, so good I wouldn't even have Ronin in the top 5 of his 90s movies.

Untouchables is what I was referring to

Ah gotcha. We're on the same page now. I thought Costner and Connery were great in it as well as Garcia but De Niro definitely shined brighter. The film had a lot of great potential but just fell short. It should be a 9/10 film but 8 is it's ceiling and 7 could be the more accurate rating. I feel you need to watch a film at minimum 3 times before you can truly give an accurate rating.

No I havent. Never even heard of it besides the book

Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow and De Niro. It's a love/romantic story but from the trailer it looked like it could be a great watch.

Waiting for your New York, New York review.

Honestly that film based off the synopsis and trailer makes me feel it's going to be a brutal watch but I'll do my best to squeeze it in there before March. I can't make any promises though.

In the 90s it briefly became a thing to take classics and set them in the 90s...Romeo and Juliet, Ever After, etc. But I felt Great Expectations was the gold standard of adaptations.

The Untouchables is one of my all-time favorite films. I stop and watch if it comes on the TV.

Oh yeah I remember that. I remember seeing a hamlet or macbeth set in the modern era with guns and all but the original Shakespeare dialogue.

Movie #10 - Ronin

ronin-year-1998-director-john-frankenheimer-movie-poster-BDPBT1.jpg

Synopsis: Deirdre (Natascha McElhone) puts together a team of experts that she tasks with stealing a valuable briefcase, the contents of which are a mystery. The international team includes Sam (Robert De Niro), an ex-intelligence officer, along with Vincent (Jean Reno), Gregor (Stellan Skarsgard) and others. As their operation gets underway, several team members are found to be untrustworthy, and everyone must complete the mission with a watchful eye on everyone else.

My Rating - 7/10

Very underrated film when it comes to some of the best action movies of the 90s. The car chase scenes alone are worth watching for how well done they were. It's a really good movie that could have been better. It's a strong 7 for me and worth watching if you haven't seen it already.
