Reinier de Ridder recently detailed his strategy to finish Robert Whittaker.

De Ridder will headline UFC on ABC 9 against Whittaker on Saturday at the Etihad Arena in Yas Island, Abu Dhabi. “The Dutch Knight” wants to put pressure on Whittaker from the very onset, as he believes the Australian likes space. De Ridder expects Whittaker to throw his signature high kick combination once he has made reads. However, de Ridder believes his early pressure will create openings for some big shots, probably even some flashy knees like in his last win over Bo Nickal. De Ridder predicts that he will eventually take Whittaker down and choke him out.

De Ridder Plans to Pressure Whittaker at UFC Abu Dhabi

“I know I gotta step on the gas anyway,” de Ridder told Submission Radio. Because what he likes is when you give him some space, when he can see what you’re doing, when he can read you, that’s what he likes best. And then he does his best work, most likely gonna throw the 1-2 high kick once he sees what you’re doing. So I think it’s very important for me to step on the gas from the get-go here… I see myself putting a lot of pressure on him, hitting him with some good shots early. Maybe another knee, maybe some other cool strikes, taking him down and choking him out.”

De Ridder’s only two career losses have come against Anatoly Malykhin in ONE Championship. The former ONE Championship two-division title holder has been on a tear since signing with the UFC. De Ridder submitted Gerald Meerschaert and Kevin Holland before knocking out three-time NCAA Division I champ Nickal. Meanwhile, Whittaker has perpetually been in the middleweight title picture, only losing to elite competition. “The Reaper” is 2-2 in his last four and coming off a submission loss against Khamzat Chimaev.

People are sleeping on Whittaker. The Riddler might be due for a starching
Very possible. If he can't get Rob down and make something happen, something that historically hasn't happened very often at MW.

He looks kind of slow in the standup.

I like both of these guys so I don't want to see Whittaker lose. RDR is on a roll and a very brilliant prospect and what he did to Bo Nickal was biblical, but from my morality police perspective, there is no one better than Whittaker. He truly exemplifies how a martial artist should carry himself.

Have Robert publicly spoken about the condition of his horrific gum/jaw injury?

I imagine RDR is going to immediately crank dudes face if he gets in position.

I favor Whittaker but RDR has been proving me all kinds of wrong lately. Excited for this one.

Rob's due for another KO win. I'm 60/40 on him starching the Riddler.
Yes, I have a hard time picking this one.
I will probably just enjoy it without putting in a bet.

Out in the open, Rob should have a pretty big striking advantage and speed advantage.

On the ground and in the clinch is where I see RDR having success, but taking it to the ground might be difficult since Robs TDD is usually on point.

You are going to be surprised at how much larger he is than Rob and how effective he'll be in the striking.
RDR is probably the most criminally slept on fighter in the UFC.

Sort of?

He said dricus did it to him, Then khamzat reaggrevated it.

unless you mean after khamzat, But supposedly it was a lingering issue for him

Yeah. It was a childhood injury that got exacerbated in the DDP fight. Khamzat was able to capitalize on it.

RDR is a big damn dude and skilled to boot so I'm curious to see how he does against Robert. Robert is as battle tested as they come so I'll take Rob via KO/TKO in the third, but I won't be the least bit surprised if RDR pulls this out via decision or even domination.

Bo Nickal gonna be at home praying for Rob to get starched lol.

I've watched enough RDR when he was over at ONE and I don't see a reality where Rob starches him. He's only been stopped by strikes once and it was by the same guy, Anatoly who also fights at HW. Rob does not have the kind of power in his hands Anatoly does so it's very doubtful Rob finishes him. At the most it will be a decision if Rob manages to get it done. However, RDR's grappling is no joke and if he gets Rob down I don't have a doubt that Rob is most likely cooked.

Thanks for the insight, helpful for us who have never watched him outside of UFC.

I'm assuming his chin is very good?

This was the only guy to finish him or even stumble him to my memory (could be wrong), the only 3 weight champion in MMA history while those three consisted of the heaviest available.

What I'm trying to tell you is that Malykin's piss could melt a thermos.

I have a hard time seeing Rob finishing him since I've only seen Rob finish one fella in forever (i like Rob, but it's reality)

Either Reindeer gets blasted by Rob to a KO loss or he's able to get Rob down and control him or get a sub. I'm about 70/30 on getting blasted by Rob, and I say this as someone who's bet on Reindeer his last 3 UFC fights. Rob should have a pretty clear speed advantage.
