Alex and Ankalaev were both available. The UFC booked Ank vs Rakic and then immediately booked Alex vs Rountree. That made no sense. The UFC % are keeping Alex away from Ankalaev. Alex can't fight him if the UFC does not put Ank in front of him. This MYTH Ank refused a fight with Alex is complete BS. Add in the Gimme fight with Khalil and it is clear as day the UFC wants Alex to get another KO win and they are SHOWCASING him. Its as blatant as Anderson vs James Irvin, Forest and Bonnar. At least Anderson was moving up a division.
The point is, if Alex gets another KO and Ankalaev defeats Rakic, they're going to fight one another. That's inevitable. Poatan was ready to fight Jon Jones, who has top notch wrestling and is a tier above Ankalaev. Ankalaev last win was against Johnny Walker... the first fight being a no contest. Ankalaev chose not to fight vs Pereira in 300. Ok, that was religious motive, but the UFC offered him the fight. The same way he was offered to fight Poatan in 303... or am I wrong?
Rountree is someone who's not well known... but still has a huge muay thai skill and power. He is a dangerous match. For Poatan, that fight isn't good either because he's fighting against a good but less ranked fighter... being his third fight in this year only. His level of activity is insane. He was ready to fight Aspinall after 300. He offered as a back up fighter.
Ankalaev pushed for them to fight in the Dubai card... it's not his prerogative to choose the fight's place. "Ok we are gonna fight, but it won't be in this card". That's it... for a guy that is way less inactive, less ranked, less popular, to demand the fight to be in the Dubai card, and if that does not happen --- "He's running!!!" ... that makes no sense.
If so, guys with outstanding striking would always be the ones to stand out in UFC... but Alex and Izzy were among the few hugely good strikers with some ground knowledge (Alex's is getting better apparently, and a lot) that started to reopen the strikers era, else mainly guys with strong grappling technique were the ones succeeding... Jon Jones, DC, Khabib, Islam, Chimaev... it's rare for there to be a one KO fighter go far in the UFC for more that ppl like these guys... because wrestling isn't being neglected by the UFC, the best fighters were wrestlers or had it as a huge weapon. There were videos from experienced mma fighters saying "Alex proved we know nothing about mma". Because grappling, wrestling was always understood as essential to go far in UFC. In fact, UFC has rules like not knee'ing when the opponent is with one hands down that favours wrestlers a lot... or not elbowing the back head while they are trying to level down to take down... One FC, actually, has rules that make it harder for wrestlers, who can't be so cozy in certain positions since some blows are allowed there. While wrestlers, like Islam vs Volk 1, would feel the blow and go to a single leg... well, Alex can't kick him with his other leg, so his wrestling saves him with rules in which in One for example, it'd be different, assuming the rule was applied to UFC. Not that they wouldn't be champions ofc... just that UFC STILL has rules that make it cozier for wrestlers.
The thing is, while it's tough to develop a grappling huge technique with way less amount of time, take down defenses are really improving. Ppl think Islam is worse than Khabib in wrestling, but it's said their wrestling matches were always difficult and even... Since the wrestling area was standing out too much, take down defenses got improved more and more... Islam had a hard time keeping Volk down in their first fight, had a hard time finishing Dustin since Dustin takedown and ground defense improved due to technology capturing through coaches specialists more and more ways to deal with the huge weapon that are wrestlers. So it's coming to an era of whoever has a good, decent take down defense, is a very good jiu-jitsu fighter and is preparing to defend takedowns and not take damage on the ground... all while having massive power and massive stand up technique is proving to be more effective... to be the new best ones. With calf kicks, strong ones also making wrestling more difficult... jab that levels down and hit the body, like the ones Poatan threw when Jiri would level down before either going for a take down or attacking with an upper, nulled the take down possibility in those cases... with strikeing when done by someone with outstanding power, very little telegraphed movements being a good weapon... and as said above, quick take down and ground defense improvements...
