i think stipes conditioning would hold up. nog is a smaller guy then stipe i dont see how he grinds him. hes not gonna control him in a clinch or anything like that. the fight would probably be stipe stuffing his takedowns and laying in guard or standing up to strike and stipe would be the one controlling the clinch.

nog had the benefit that in PRIDE takedown defense wasnt ass stressed as it is now. now we have wrestlers that have solid striking unlike back then where it was still wrestling vs BJJ where the wrestler took the bjj guy down and tried to survive in the guard and just GNP.

I think I already posted in this thread but Fedor in his prime, was on jelly legs and one more shot from being knocked out cold by one of the worst strikers ever: Fujita. The guy who regularly tripped over his own feet because he didn't know how to throw a punch:

He comes in with head straight up all the time. His boxing is overrated , he can't afford to come in so stiff against francis or he will go stiff Jan 20

fedor is better at one thing, and that is submissions. unfortunately for him, stipe is a much larger man with a D1 wrestling background who would almost certainly control any grappling that happened in the fight. even more unfortunate for fedor, stipe is a much better striker on top of being much larger and longer than anyone fedor ever fought. even if fedor was able to get in on stipe and initiate a clinch or some sort of shot, he would be dominated on the ground in terms of position. but my honest assessment? fedor probably wouldnt even make it to a clinch before being finished. he loses the fight standing and probably never even gets close to stipe.

You said Feor is only better than Stipe at one thing -- submissions. That is wrong. The thing Fedor was best at is transitioning between disciplines. That was Fedors greatest strength. You can see it everywhere-- in the Tim Sylvia fight you see Fedor throwing some bombs but stepping into grappling distance, grabbing Silvia's head and then transitioning to uppercut and other strikes for the win.


What made his approach so bad ass is that he means it with every attempt they are not feints and he is so quick in his transitions that the other fighter cant process WTF is going on.

Fedor was engaging very stupidly with Fujita. He was being reckless because he didn't respect him. If he behaved that way with Stipe he would be in trouble but I very much doubt he would. Fedor would take Stipe seriously and the fight wouldn't look anything like the Fujita fight.
 
After watching the fights last night from both organizations it's pretty obvious that the idea of the heavier divisions being so evolved from the Pride era is a totally fallacy/fantasy really. Watch any of the top fighters from the heavies pride had and you never see guys today with that kind of conditioning, technique, and overall toughness. All nostalgia aside it's kind of hard to argue if you watch these fights side by side. I'm willing to bet most of the entire UFC roster today couldn't even finish a 10 minute round nevermind doing two more 5 minute rounds after that while still having enough energy to keep wrestling and striking with good technique. Fedor from his best years would literally maul just about everyone from today's division if they weren't able to land an early KO punch or kick that he never saw coming. Nobody from today could go into later rounds with "prime" Fedor and be successful. Cains cardio ain't shit compared to how active Fedor could be for 20 minutes with a 10 min first round.
 
I got Fedor if not under unified rules. Otherwise Stipe.
