Absolutely stoked to be promoted as a Brown Belt!! I really feel like I've been into BJJ for only 5 years. I started ~1 month before the pandemic. Although I did a bit of BJJ for 1-2 years back when I was competing in MMA ('09/'10), I was more of a striker.

I'm even more motivated to keep grinding now. Should be 2-3 years before I get my black belt, and I want to be ready for it. Sounds like I'll be teaching a bit more at the gym which should improve my game as well. Looking forward to giving back and see others succeed.

I taught both the advanced classes on Tue/Thu this week. The theme was half-guard, so we worked on lockdown. I had more options than I thought from lockdown - I could have done a 3rd class on it.

The dog hurt her leg 1km into the run on Monday. She just fell on the floor and started whimping. Got super worried and carried her back to the car. The vet said it was nothing serious—just a bad muscle cramp in her back. She couldn't jump for a few days, but she's fine now.

Spent the weekend in Canmore and Banff; it was amazing. Got a chance to roll with a Brown Belt at an open mat, and we had good wrestling exchanges.

PR'd my 5km time. It would be nice to get it at 25:00, but I don't think I can get there by running once a week.

Trying to get back to lifting twice a week. I had to sacrifice a BJJ session to do so, but I don't have any competitions in the foreseeable future, so it should be good for now.
The next comp I'm eyeing (potentially) is ADCC Vancouver. That's the end of October, so plenty of time still.

I had a few rolls at the new combat academy with the black belt there; it was a lot of fun.

Wrestling Seminar 2hrs


That was one of the best seminars I attended. He showed us several different entries to get an underhook, then 3 levels of attack from there. All systemized. Makes me want to work on my wrestling again, which I might do soon.

I signed up for a Spartan Race August 9th. I'll switch my training towards that a bit, but BJJ is still the main focus.

Finished watching the Woj lock instructional. Great stuff! I was able to hit it twice on Saturday. I re-introduced straight ankles to my game as well; I get a lot of tap from them.
I like his philosophy, and that's the hitch I had about leg lock: don't get too attached to a certain leg configuration or grip. I don't have a systemized leg attack system; I hunt for leglocks and sometimes hit them from the most random places. Instead of showing one way to do leglocks, he shows multiple entries and subs. Then, he advised us to adapt it to our game or even create our own.

Previous to that, I watched Robert Degle's instructional on cross-ashi. I implemented his idea that leglocks are either a sub or a means to get on top. As soon as I feel the finish won't be there, I use it to get top position. It's been working great, too.

Corey Seminar at Brave - 2 hrs


Corey from 10th Planet Calgary had a great seminar on guard retention. He conceptualized the difference between frames and connections, which isn't something I had thought about, and stated that frames must come before connections. If you lose one or multiple frames, you should try to re-establish those frames before moving into an offensive connection. Elbow to knee connection is essential to retaining guard, and I had heard that, but he made us play a couple of games that made that idea sink in.

It started hailing and raining as soon as we got to the top of the mountain. Quite an interesting return down the hill, soaking wet with frozen hands. Morale was good, though; it was a lot of fun to go and explore this side of the Rockies.

Spartan Race - 5km


The Spartan race was a ton of fun, as expected. It was our first one, so the goal was just to have a good time. I thought it would be more muddy than that, but there was only one obstacle with water.
Amazing experience overall, I'd recommend it. We're already planning to do the next one in May and finish under an hour.

Taught class on Tues/Thurs. Tuesday was leg entries from closed guard, both top & bottom. Thursday was half butterfly guard to leg locks. It looks like I'll be teaching more moving forward, which is awesome.

Next Comp is Oct 4th, so I'll start ramping up for that soon.
