Absolute: Lost 4-2 in the final to a 300lbs guy. I wasn't in any danger, I just couldn't move the whole time.
Bracket: Went best of 3 with the only competitor in my division. Got him in a toe hold then a 100% to armbar.

Next comp is Oct 12th, gearing up for that now.

I got silver at the tournament. 2 matches (sub only), both draws.

The first guy was ~10yr younger than me. We had a solid match back and forth. He started with an arm drag to a back take. We ended up out of bounds. Too bad, I was going to tap him right then! He had his ankles crossed perfectly in the hole. We reset in the middle and I escaped. I got him into three gogoplata sweeps. I couldn't turn it into an armbar during the roll. He was great at defending the rubber guard. I even had a Carni hook with my bottom leg but he would step over it. I caught and released 3 heel hooks. I would have won if heel hooks were legal. It sucks because I got a 99% finish rate on gogo kimuras in the gym. I need to start working on my rubber guard again. A Jersey sweep would have been the perfect move I should have done.

The second guy was 50+lbs heavier and an American wrestler. Not much to say; he took me down and stayed on top the whole time with grips and pressure. I was able to maintain my guard or recover it. I got one opportunity to go for the gogo kimura but he just busted out of it by posturing up. I got a deep underhook on a leg, which is how I enter leglocks, but I couldn't move him one inch. When he was in side control, I couldn't even fly-trap him because I couldn't reach my leg! He mounted once but I kip-escaped. He was good at keeping his legs away to avoid leglock entries.

A one-minute break between the two matches.
It is what it is. Next comp most likely Nov 2nd.

Gold in my bracket (Master 2 Purple/Brown/Black)
1st match: I got the takedown. I backstepped into saddle because it was wide open. My opponent used both hands to hold onto his trapped leg, which I had a toe-hold grip on. I quickly switched to a straight ankle lock on the secondary leg and got the tap.

2nd match: My opponent went for a sloppy uchi mata which gave me a body lock. We both started laughing and I put him down for 2 points. I was in 3/4 mount. I grabbed a giftwrap and chair-sit him into a back take for 4 points. I switched to a North south Kimura but couldn't undo his grip. I fell back into spiderweb and got the tap through a bicep slicer.


Bronze in the absolute
1st match: My opponent pulled full guard. He kept trying to attack me and break my posture. I couldn't get his guard to open up. I should have gone for the can opener... I fully stood up straight and still, the guard wouldn't open up. I finally got it to open and jumped on an outside heel hook, but he rolled us out of bounds. In this ruleset, we just reset standing which kind of sucked for me. He pulled butterfly guard this time. He somehow ended up in my Rubber guard. That specific gym knows how to counter rubber guard, so he escaped twice out of it. He got me into spiderweb and I tapped as soon as my grip broke.

2nd match: My opponent went for a single leg. I let him take it and put him into my rubber guard as a counter. He's from the same gym, so he escaped the same way, but I was ready for it. I grabbed his near leg and went into outside ashi to attack the heel hook. He defended well and backstopped with the other leg. That's what I wanted, I got the outside heel hook on the second leg to secure bronze. I didn't know he was a black belt.


All 3 guys who countered my rubberguard in these last 2 comps are from the same gym. I got footage of at least 6 escapes, so I'll analyze that to capitalize on their counters.

My first time submitting a black belt in competition, as a purple belt! Good ending to this fall competition season.

It was great to return to Wolfhouse and train with the guys there. They had me teach the class. I made a game out of body lock passing vs rubber guard retention.

I hit a dead deer on the highway driving up to Jasper on Saturday... NOT looking forward to seeing the collision repair bill tomorrow...

Two years at Purple Belt!! I adjusted the weekly title; I missed a couple of weeks somewhere along the way.

I'm back at Kingdom!!! Incredibly happy about it. I missed that gym a lot. They have wrestling classes now, so I'll be focused on wrestling for the foreseeable future.
I can also grapple there 4 times a week instead of 3. This ties up with my competition schedule for 2025, which will include some big international ones.
I'll be more diligent about planning my weight/cardio training around the 4x grappling sessions and "peaking" for the competitions.

Next weekend I'm attending a 3 day seminar from Oliver Taza. K-guard and leglocks - Let's go!!

Oliver Taza seminar in Magog was awesome.
Had the best weekend get-away in a beautiful small town. I still have to write down notes, there was a tremendous amount of information on guard retention/passing, K-guard/backside 5050 entries, and leglock finishes.
