It's been an amazing week back home for the holidays. I will deload next week, then start preparing for mid-February Competitions.

NY resolution is to stop drinking caffeine - let the fun begin.

Caffeine raises adrenaline, it makes the muscles work harder , increases alertness and reaction time . I wouldn’t call it a good thing leaving it out if you really are doing any type of physical competition . It’s actually one of the first performance enhancing stimulants going back to the civil war .

Good point! I may consider using caffeine on competition day.

Somehow my worst comp to date. Went 0/4 in the advanced division... not super mad about it. I had some cool exchanges and sequences, but it just wasn't my day.

I got a fully locked outside heel hook on my opponent in my first match. Popped his knee, and still, he wouldn't tap. Then I got him in a calf slicer from the back, again, fully hipped in with a body lock, and he still wouldn't tap.

I had to cut 5 lbs of water the morning of, I think that killed my gas tank. I had no cardio whatsoever.

My recent focus on wrestling is paying off. I got a sick takedown from an underhook into a body lock. My wrestling coach wants me to start working on doubles more, he saw a few opportunities for me to do so.

Guys roll out of bounds a lot from outside Ashi. My main coach advised me to start working on reaping/cross ashi instead to prevent rolling.

I've been working on a cool sequence and it worked pretty well, although not perfectly. From Rubber guard to gogo Kimura, and when they try to escape, I go into a leg entanglement. I haven't work on my rubber guard much lately with my focus on Wrestling. It could use some refreshers to strategize it better.

My main goal is the ADCC Montreal in April, so this was the warm-up comp for it really.
I'm competing again next weekend, hope it goes better.

I didn't compete on Saturday. My bracket was at 9:30 pm, in a small town 1h30 away from the main city.
The absolute would have been even later than that!! Completely absurd.
They gave me a voucher for the next event.

Also, speaking to my coach, I need to get back to BJJ focus instead of wrestling.
I was BJJ-rusty at the event because I had only been wrestling for a couple of months.
If I have extra time/energy, I can wrestle, but my competitions follow the BJJ rules, so that should be the bulk of my training.

The wrestling seminar was great though. I need to work on more snapdowns to create openings in the hand fighting stage.

My friend came to teach us an hour of Greco wrestling, and it was incredible. He has 25+ years of experience in his home country of Georgia. The techniques are energy efficient and don't put you in danger of guillotines and such.

He's teaching drop-in classes on Saturday mornings, I may start attending that.

I taught two classes at Kingdom while the head coach was away. Of course, it focused on leg locks.
Afterward, I received some positive feedback. I could see a lot more leg lock entries at the open mat.

This was my last week of hard training, too. I am doing ADCC Montreal on April 19th. The goal next week is to stay active while focusing on recovery.

ADCC was a great experience. Didn't win but performed well. I did the advanced (black belt) division at Master's and the absolute.

First match: got RNC'd at 3:30 min, but I got a bite on a heel hook I couldn't finish. Also escaped a front headlock which this opponent was known for. Good back and forth.

2nd match: lost on points (6-0) from two guard passes. I recovered guard both times.. This guy would NOT engage. I had to pull guard halfway through the match because nothing was happening, and the ref kept giving us warnings. Then, he kept pulling away from me every time I connected, so I couldn't enter the legs. He won on points, but I couldn't care less; what a boring way to do BJJ.

Won my first match in the absolute. Pulled rubber guard, then switched to K-guard into an outside heel hook in 40 seconds.

2nd match in absolute: probably the biggest guy I ever grappled and a state wrestling champion. I pulled guard, there no scenario where I could take this guy down. I got him into the saddle, and I was SO close to getting an inside heel hook, but he busted out of it. I need to focus on controlling the secondary leg. Eventually, he passed my guard and won on points. Best match that day.

Amazing experience overall. Proved me that I really belong in the black belt division even if I didn't win.
I'm competing again locally next weekend; can't wait.

Gold in my division
Silver in the pro division

I had 7 matches on Saturday. Won 6 of them. 5x Heel hooks and 1x Calf Slicer.

I lost the final of the pro division by heel hook. I got the guy in a toe hold, fully cranked, but he wouldn't tap.
The same kid beat me by armbar at the last CLBJJ. No sweat, he's very good. I'll beat him eventually. It was a real back-and-forth match again.

Promotions are this week at the gym. Fingers crossed. If I'm not promoted now, it'll be at Christmas time.

I'm also teaching a leglock class again on Monday.

Taught the class on Monday, and it went well. Introduced these guys to the concept of Kani Basami from different positions.

Promotions have been pushed back by a week, but competitors are encouraged to participate in the June 14th competition to get promoted. So, I'm signing up for that. I will do the Expert division and the absolute.
