The BJJ gym by my place (Bairro) has always been GI-Focused but now they offer more no-gi, including a morning class. Been looking for a morning no-gi for a while, I will go back there for sure.

Competing next weekend, going to deload now.

Spent 3 days in the Rockies. It was amazing. The landscapes are breathtaking. Felt good to spend some quiet time away from the city and disconnected from screens.

CBJJF No-gi Comp - Gold

The competition went really well. Got Gold in my division. Was able to pull off a Backtake from homie control. Almost landed a gogoplata, but I couldn't finish it and ended up with a temporary gogo launch.

Competing against next week in Calgary. Open weight Purple/Brown/Black... Going for the experience, hoping to learn a thing or two that will improve my game.

Switched gym for a couple reasons.
  • It's 2 blocks from my house, so convenient. (vs 30 min drive previous one)
  • 6 AM Class, been wanting that for so long
Used to train with the owner back in our young MMA days too. On top of that, they'll be Renzo Gracie affiliated in the next couple of weeks which is pretty cool. Also looks like I'll have the opportunity to coach No-Gi. They're primarily gi but trying to grow their no-gi program. I've been leg-locking everyone there.

Was a tough decision. Been at Kingdom for 3 years, got both of my belts there, and made good friendships. I think it's the right move though. Definitely have a newfound motivation with my BJJ, 6+ hrs on the mat this week.

In-House comp next Friday, looking forward to it.

My first no-gi Superfight is booked for May 27th. I hope it goes ahead, there are wildfires around the hosting city which might result in the event cancellation.

The leg lock seminar was mostly IBJFF legal leglocks in a gi scenario. Still, I got to explore a few options from 50/50.

No cardio this week, air toxicity is 10+ on a 10 scale due to the smoke from the wildfires.

This was the best seminar I attended. Instead of teaching us techniques, Corey taught us a framework to analyze guard passing. He made us play different games to see how the concepts relate.

Oliver Taza taught us some critical details on Straight ankle locks and outside heel hooks. He also showed some advanced entries into cross-ashi which was amazing.

My leg lock game is improving daily. I'm focused on studying certain athletes: Craig Jones, Eoghan O'Flanagan, Robert Degle, and Oliver Taza.

Tournament was a blast. My first three matches, I got a sub under a minute! An Omoplata then two heel hooks. Too bad I have no footage. Then came my toughest opponent, the guy who beat me at my first purple belt tournament. I got him in an outside heel hook but my foot got stuck in his short and the ref stopped the match! He escaped on restart, took my back and subbed me. If I had stalled this match I would have won gold because he had a tie in his first match.

BUT I qualified for absolute. Who do I face first? Same freaking guy. I pulled guard right away. Couldn't elevate him to enter leg attacks so I established rubber guard. Cleared the neck, got a gogoplata but couldn't finish. Switched to a straight armbar for the tap! Then I faced the absolute winner, we had a good scrap but he got me into an armbar.

In other news, I made a business plan and started looking at commercial space to open up my own gym. Pretty sure I have a sponsor too. I'll spend much more time in Calgary over the next year.
