Opinion Pardon Power to become more Important than ever

It's more important that it be seriously amended, or completely taken out of presidential power, before it gets out of hand.

See: today.

Yeah, if you did something illegal, you face the consequences whatever side you're on. The president shouldn't be allowed to overrule the legal system.

It has reached the point where the power is clearly being abused and needs to be amended. In my country this power is only used to pardon people who have already served 10 years or more.

The whole idea of "preemptive pardons" is just absolutely ludicrous. It sounds like a plot in a Hollywood movie about widespread government corruption.

Yes. But I did have at the back of my mind the widespread powers of governors to also pardon, though of course only for state offenses. They could very well get in on this if nothing is done.
Yea, true. I have a similar concern after this month if it was to expand more than it was historically. Having it be some act of mercy from the government that a president would have to weigh so criticism from the public for seemed fine. But if the public criticism is only partisan, it won’t matter.

The pardon power has a lot of potential for abuse. If left unchecked, we could see a future where both sides routinely premptively pardon everyone loyal to them on their way out. This has all kinds of potential for abuse from both Democrats and Republicans.

Trump talking about Biden's pardons.

I haven’t researched it, but I’m pretty sure the power to pardon is in the Constitution. That suggests to me that it is a holdover from Royal Prerogative.

Keep in mind though, that when applied properly, pardons can be a tool of genuine justice. Even last resort justice.

Bidens sweeping pardons don’t look nearly as bad now after trumps comments that Biden should have pardoned himself. Looks like that was trumps plan all along. His revenge tour. N

Trump parsons woman who raised money to honor a slain cop and then used that money for plastic surgery.

Fiore, who does not have a law degree, was appointed as a judge in deep-red Nye County in 2022 shortly after she lost her campaign for state treasurer.

She was elected last June to complete the unexpired term of a judge who died but had been suspended without pay amid her legal troubles. Pahrump is an hour’s drive west of Las Vegas.

In her statement Thursday, Fiore also said she plans to return to the bench next week.
