Metal/Rock/Industrial Ozzy Osbourne

Zakk has been sober for more than a decade now. Had to or it would have killed him. I personally think he was the ideal choice to fill in for Dime. Totally different guitarists, but they were close friends. Also a good chunk of Zakk's career has been devoted to covering other guitar gods' work (Randy Rhodes, Tony Iommi, Hendrix, etc.). Zakk is on my personal mount Rushmore of guitarists.
He is old school, he plays up to the ideal of a guitar god. Last time I saw bls he jumped the stage and played through the crowd, climbed a wall onto the balcony and hung off the side of the balcony soloing the whole time. Also fun fact he is from a couple towns away from me.

I had a hard flight getting some old time Ozzie fans to recognize how good he was, I'd listen to bls and they would complain he's not Rhodes. He eventually won them over

I just picked up his recent Zakk Sabbath release. I know it's sacrilegious to say this, but I prefer his versions over the original.

Not Sabbath but this blows Ozzy away in my opinion. And Zakk Sabbath is better then Black Sabbath(opinion again), but it's maybe easier to be better since he studied with Ozzy and knows all the tricks

Zakk is such an outspoken worshiper of the guitar Gods that came before him that he doesn't realize that he is one of them, and that's one of the many things that makes him so cool.

Unboxing of Ozzy's box set chock full of albums, posters galore, etc. :):)

Put your "this is where metal started" shoes out in the garden. I'm not alone, am I?
No.

But your not alone.

I think that he lacked in vocal talent he more than made up for in raw emotion, and that was PERFECT for the early sabbath records. It winds up working against him a bit in his solo band, which is less heavy, and more "normal" cleaner music but the guy just has a magnetic charisma around him. Once your an Ozzy fan, that's fucking it, no one can tell you shit. There's something to that.

Even some later Ozzy was good and only he could do this shit.

No way Dio was better.

  • Ozzy has a unique voice that has no imitators. Dio had a homogeneous voice that had many imitators.
  • The music Sabbath did with Ozzy was ground-breaking and completely new. The music Sabbath did with Dio was just good.
  • Ozzy's solo music was enormously successful and spawned many music festivals. Dio's solo music was just good.
Of course Dio was better, Objectivley Dio is a better singer than anyone who ever sang.

But Ozzy was on the first 6 Sabbath records. Those records cannot be fucked with. I never sit around thinking wow I wish Dio sang on those records. Because those records are everything I need in my life.

"the music Sabbath did with Dio was just good"

No fucking way are you fuckin serious?? Posers leave the hall!!!!!!!!!!!

Honestly, he's metal AF but his guitarists are why anyone listens to him. Without Randy Rhoads, I doubt he'd have a career after he left Sabbath. He made Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman happen. Ozzy just showed up to sing.
Yes but how many would have cared about any of his guitarists if they werent given the golden ticket to play in a band with the Ozzman?

Sab w/Dio is like Van Hagar, yes the lead singer is more talented, and musically the stuff might be tighter....and some of their stuff is damn good.

...but it's not the same ground-breaking band that captured that magic.

Much love to RJD: but Sabbath is Ozzy, Tony, Geezer and Bill.

I dont look at it like a competition.

The albums Dio did with Sabbath are phenomenal. But it leans more into the 80's style, where the 70s material had a palpable magick that somewhat got left behind as we enter a new decade. On top of that, the crucial element of Bill Ward's playful spontaneous style of drumming had eroded by this point because of the drugs and alcohol.

But Iommi/Dio is a match made in heaven. There was incredible music made.

Oh no competition here either. Heaven and Hell is a PERFECT song.

Just agreeing that OG Sabbath is exactly that. Revered, covered, imitated, but never replaceable.

That much is true.

Even Dio had his own way of singing Ozzy's stuff, and it was good, but not the same. Ozzy had that raw animalistic quality that Dio didnt possess.

Are you saying Quiet Riot isn't on the same level of The Prince of Darkness himself? :)

No! Ozzy sung " what is this that stands before me?? "

The answer to that question was metal's creation.

My 2 cents: no matter what, Ozzy was much better as lead singer in Sabbath and less as a solo act.
Period.
