Multiplat Official Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Discussion

Also I have no idea what I am doing wrong, but I will get perfect dodges or parries on an enemy group attack, but for some reason the other character gets hit full blast. A skill issue I am sure, but if all 3 are not moving at the same speed, that is just another design choice I do not like.
Only thing I can think of is that one of the characters has a status effect that doesn't allow them to move. That, or a maybe a sweeping attack that hits the characters from left to right(or vice versa), and you're dodging is a bit too slow or fast for them all to escape the hit.

Haven't noticed that myself, but if they really are moving at different speeds and have slightly different timing for the dodges and parries, I'm guessing it's a stat thing. Maybe "speed" affects it, or something.

I get what you're saying about the "tedious" nature of a battle system like this. I've felt the same about other games with similar systems. It can get annoying having to constantly input the same button commands over and over. I didn't personally feel it with this game, but I hear ya.

I'm at Act 3.

The previous act really put me through the paces with it's twists and turns. It's something special.

It looks like I'm going to try and clear the world, then head to the final boss, who I actually kind of sympathise with.

Beat it.

GOTY? Easily. One of the best games of all time? Yes. Better than "The Witcher 3"? No.

That said, it is one the most complete and tight gaming experiences I've ever played. Great games have a hard time sticking the landing at the end, and this one just nailed it. They had a very focused vision, and they saw it through. Narratively speaking, it's perfection. Didn't overstay it's welcome and get lost in the weeds. In terms of pacing and execution, it's absolutely perfect. The art style is right there with it.

Gameplay wise, it's the most revolutionary JRPG I've played since FFVII, which also managed to take the genre out of some of it's more hardcore/annoying aspects. All the gameplay aspects are fun and just work. I never once felt bored playing this.

If I had a complaint, it would be that it didn't naturally let you experience all it had to offer before the credits rolled. You gotta do some serious grinding to get past the entire game. I left a bunch red zones and bosses, and the fat guy never did learn how to dive into the water. That said, there's a LOT more game out there, for people who are willing to put in the work, and that's a plus.

10/10. Essential gaming.

This is actually one thing I liked about the game. A lot of times bonus/side content is very boring and pointless to the overall game. Here though it's challenging and very rewarding with the extra content\info you're given about the overall world/characters. It's not some useless go get me six chickens so I can make a meal type quest.

Even people who decide to skip it aren't missing a ton of information about the overall story. So you still get a good story even if you skip it. If you decide to do it though you are rewarded with a bunch of extra story info that really lets you understand the characters better. Like Maelle's side quest is so good and really helps you understand the characters better.

Sandfall is working on an Esquie plush. I’m so buying one. I’ll tell my wife it’s for my daughter lol. They are also warning people not to get ripped off because a lot of people are selling their own pretending it’s the official one.

Which ending did you get?

I think I got the bad ending. I wanted to send Maelle back, but I also wanted her to protect the canvas so the world and the characters would be alright, as a painted world is still a painted world and those characters that I grew to love were real. I don't think that the option was there, so I chose to have her stay and fight Verso, as she said that she would go back eventually. Judging by the ending, it didn't look like it was going to go that way.

It's a firm 9/10 for me. The story was captivating, the characters were great, the game looks stunning, the music beautiful.

The combat was pretty good and engaging but it could be frustrating at times, as the parry system can be punishing and require a lot of focus. It was fun all in all, though the game, as a game, started to tire for me once I hit level 70 and was grinding Dark Shores over and over. I missed one world boss, the dragon over the sea, the painting boss and a bunch of beaches because, though I enjoyed my journey through the game, I just wanted to get to the end.

I'm glad that it was on Gamepass because I would never never looked at it if I had to pay for it, but I'd pay full whack for the game.

Is it Game of the Year for me so far? I've played Monster Hunter: Wilds and liked it, but I thought that it was still lacking post-story content. I also played Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, which I thoroughly enjoyed, though the main story, amusing as it was, lacked weight. I think Expedition 33 edged it, by a hair.

I picked the same ending as you, but I'm guessing both endings are bittersweet, and makes you question whether or not you made the right decision. That seems apt for this game. I'm guessing if you went the other way...

Maelle would be the one "trapped" in a world she didn't want to be in. That performance at the end with Verso going "I don't want to live this life" was as good as any movie performance I've seen. So good.

This game is gonna be talked about for a looooong time. It's an instant classic.

Watching the other one, I definitely thought that I'd made the wrong choice. I had it on my head since the start of Act 3 that Maelle had to leave to protect herself and the painting, but killing the team, who were more like a family, just seemed outright backstabbing betrayal.

Yeah, I think this game will pick up a while slew of awards by this year's end. It'll be well deserved too.

Gotta say, this is also a game I want to replay immediately, because it's like a movie you liked but know you could get more out out of it, knowing what you know. Can't say many games have had that effect to me, if any. TLOU would be up there, but it's not as layered as this one is. The gameplay also lends itself to experimentation and addictive skill sharpening as well, so it's not like you'd feel like you're doing the same old shit either. The combat is just so much fun.

Think I'll do that, but grind it out a bit more to see all the shit I missed.

I uninstalled it.

I looked at Fextralife to see what I missed, and I missed a couple of big bosses in Act 3. With that said, I was getting bored grinding at level 80. New Game+ was tempting, but I chose to let my first playthrough be the defining one. I wish that I did settle in a bit more and get my characters to level 100, but I think I'd just get frustrated with the grind and stop playing entirely.

gah, do i need to order this game?

I'd recommend it.

I went with v also going with the other one kinda makes Maelle a hypocrite especially if you end up doing her side quest. Her saying the reason she did what she did because that's what they wanted but won't give you know who what they want. I ended up doing mostly everything in my first playthrough all super bosses got one person to 99 with the others not being that far behind. Only thing I really have left probably won't do is the last achievement get all the music I think I have about 30 out of the 33.

Yes, V is supposed to be the good ending. The thing with the painting is everyone is going to die no matter what. Once Maelle or the mom dies the father will kill destroy it. Verso's soul also said he didn't want to paint anymore on top of that. I was on Maelle side until the end when I saw her mom suffering that's when I realized this has stop. Good ending and I can really see why people sided with Maelle. Luna's death stare at V when he wins though is brutal.

Going to fire this one up tonight or tomorrow. Might not finish, as rpgs are tough to get through for myself nowadays, but quick question.

What is one thing you wish you knew before getting into this game? What’s the one thing I should keep in mind, as someone not too into turn-based rpgs?

Saw this posted online and thought it was funny as hell. I'm usually not into this sort of stuff but this was well done.

The only thing I wish I knew is that there is an accessory like system in the game. The things you equip that give you buffs to your attacks/def/etc. These items also add +health (when directly equipped) and I didn't realize that. I thought all they did was give you like +burn damage. Hard to explain because you haven't played yet but maybe that will be enough for you to understand.

Also don't be afraid to grind for like 15-30 mins before a boss fight if you're having a hard time surviving. You'll notice your under leveled if you are gaining like 1/2 a level after a fight. I only had to do it like 3 times throughout the game (minus post game content). Also if you're going for plat make sure you don't end the prologue without getting a key first.

Regarding the ending.

I feel like people are stuck too much in this black and white mentality. To me there is no good or bad ending. This story is very similar to a Greek tragedy in the sense that each outcome is bittersweet. On one side you have the gods (painters) that are quarrelling with one another and on the other side you have the mortals (the painted ones) that are unfortunately affected by the family drama. Each painting is essentially a world and erasing that world imo is akin to a genocide. Each person in these paintings has their own dreams, loved ones, etc and having that all erased does seem a bit cruel and I find it odd so many people kind of just look past this and think about what's best for one family and not the many families that will vanish into nothingness. Both endings are sad. I did choose Verso because I felt like the narrative was pointing me in that direction but I think it's completely okay to side with Maelle here.

I wish I knew how navigation worked right out of the gate. It has no mini-map, but the levels are cleverly designed to lead you down the right path with visual cues(the lights). I'm replaying it right now, and I've already discovered so many extra areas, now that I know what are side paths and main paths.

The whole Picto system is another one. Whether it's perks, or how the Lumina system works. You have to to install them to get the perks that can raise your stats. The perks are hard to miss, even though they're right in front of you face. You also have to keep them installed to learn them, so that all of your characters have access to their powers through Lumina points. That's a big one. You just install a new one, learn it, and then replace it with one that isn't learned. You can really buff your party out early with that knowledge.

I see what you're saying. I was easily able to brush it off because well those people are all going to die no matter what. Even if you side with Maelle. Yes they will get more time but when Maelle eventually dies the father will destroy the painting. At least with Verso you get to attempt to save the gods who maybe will go on to create a new world and new life. On top of that allowing the painting to continue involves way to much suffering. The mom and daughter will most likely die. The man who created that whole world has a piece of his soul trapped in it and doesn't want to do it anymore. Also I just don't feel the brother sacrificed his life to save Maelle only to turn around and have her die in his painting\world that he created. The whole story seemed to be about grief and learning how to move on. I do agree that each outcome is bittersweet but overall one outcome has a real future while the other just leads to the whole world and the gods being destroyed. At best the father and sister live and who knows how well they'll be able to handle even more death in their family.
