Multiplat Official Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Discussion

Okay so it turns out this game does have a flaw. Damn those stupid gestral beaches and their mini games. Not sure if I have the patience to platinum this game. I think there’s a trophy to beat those games and I also feel like finding all the expedition intel will be a pain in the butt. Still 10/10 game imo. No game will ever be perfect
Yea I wasn't a fan of any of that stuff either but like you said no game is perfect. At least it's optional and easy to skip so no big deal. Some of it I did because I could quickly get through it but some of it is really hard.

LOL, yeah.

I gave the log jumping on the first one about ten tries before I deemed it impossible. Would rather face a boss with a million hit points who can end you in one hit, than ever attempt that shit again.

Let me get this straight it's a flaw in the game just because you flat out suck at doing the gestral beach games they are not even that hard. The only one that gave me a little bit of trouble was the second one.

Are you serious that one isn't even hard. Got it on my third try. Like seriously how was that one giving you so much trouble

The controls are absolute shit. Sometimes the jump(or the pull up, more precisely) registers, sometimes it doesn't. The sensitivity is too floaty, where if you don't stay in an absolute perfect line, you'll just slip off the side. On top of that, it sends you back to the beginning if you fuck up.

This game does almost everything right, but the platforming challenges are garbage. It's just not built for them. I would rather do the castle rooftop run in the original "Dark Souls" a thousand times over, than do that shit again. Just awful.

The jumping and climbing is janky and I fell a bunch of times. Getting to the top just seems like a pain. If the platforming was better I'd give it more chances. It knocked it out of the ballpark in the areas that matter though. Music, characters, story, gameplay, etc.

Both of your posts are pretty hostile. Calm down

Haha, yeah...

I did it, but it took a lot of tries...

Man the dev is about to nerf the skill that makes Maelle OP. I was literally one shotting everything last night. Such a shame they are doing this I was going to slowly work on the plat but if they nerf this skill to much I'm out. I don't understand why they care. It's a SP game let us break it if we want to break it. Focus on bug fixes and QOL improvements.

What's the skill?

Stendhal. You don't get it until Act 3. It's what everyone is using to pull off their insane damage numbers. I did 5 million last night with very little effort. If I added more buffs to Maelle she would be doing even more damage. As it is I'm 1 shotting everything.

lol at the results. Very close , I vote whee.

Did they patch it already. I want to try it out.

Supposed to be tomorrow I think but he posted it at like 3am on twitter saying tomorrow so not sure if he really meant today or actually tomorrow. I'm blocking auto updates for now. I enjoy it and I want to use it to beat the rest of the game (post game).

Reminds me of the final weapon in FF16 a bit. Where you could charge it up and 1 hit kill everything on the screen. It was a lot of fun and made me glad I replayed the game cause otherwise I had no desire to use that final weapon.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 devs to issue its first nerf to an ability that does 2 billion damage: 'We gave it a big damage boost—and clearly overdid it'

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is getting its first set of hotfixes tomorrow—which'll include a nerf to Stendhal, a skill that's been allowing players to do around 4 billion damage, which, as I observed yesterday, is enough to kill the game's hardest endgame superboss 45 times over.

"We hadn’t planned to make any balance changes this early," Sandfall Interactive writes on X, "just bug fixes, unless something clearly stood out. Well, Stendhal did."

In case you're unfamiliar with Stendhal, players are able to combo it with a set of skills, Pictos (equipment) and Luminas (equipment passives) to damage scale it into the stratosphere—while this required quite a bit of setup to start one-tapping postgame bosses, it was still good from the outset and only scaled into low orbit from there.

I saw some people online saying the console version wont be patched until later so console players might still have some time. I fought the hardest boss in the game last night and still couldn't kill him easily with this skill. I could do it if I learned his pattern but I just don't care that much. I've put the game down for now and might come back later to get the plat.

I finished the story last night and wow great ending. I have some issues with the last dungeon. Up until that point it feels like they did a wonderful job of introducing new mechanics and finding ways to challenge the player. That last dungeon however was a joke. I ended up killing almost everything in one hit including the final boss. There’s a certain picto (you all know what I mean if you got that far) that makes everything very easy. I wish they held off on giving that to players. Either that or not encourage players to do side quests or exploration that will undoubtedly overpower your character. Was listening to Maximillian Dood’s thoughts on the game and he said the same thing. I'm having trouble scoring the game. Keep going back and forth on it. Might have to just think things over a while. Going to give it a break for now. Bought The Midnight Walk and have Doom coming up next week. I think one thing we can all agree on is that this is one of the best years of gaming in a long time.

I am an hour or so in, and am enjoying it.

I just want to know who decided I cannot manually save the game.

I mean, that is just a stupid fucking decision.
Did you finish it. What are your final thoughts? And did you enjoy this more than Metaphor?

I made it to the epiloge and had to stop. It is a great game, but I dunno, I was finding it a chore to get through. Some of the combat just got ridiculous to me, having to parry like moves in one attack. And the little things I did not mind, the lack of saving, maps, or escaping, eventually grinded on me.

Will finish it eventually, but need a break.

Definitely preferred Metaphor, but I can see why this game is getting universal love.

Saving is actually really generous. It auto saves after damn near anything you do. I don't know about you, but I thought it was "bonfire" related, and was running back to them to save for the first 15 hours of the game, LOL.

Anyways, "Epilogue" is where I'm at too. That fight right before it, is really annoying though. Not particularly hard, but it goes on forever(as does the level itself). I figure there's still a bunch of game to go, since the funny fat guy can't even fly yet, and I've still got a bunch of skills to unlock and many "danger" areas to explore.

Despite it's minor flaws, it would have to do something really stupid for me not to give it a 10/10. I want a movie.

The map thing had to be a creative decision. Afterall, you're an expedition heading into uncharted territory. Perhaps they could have given you maps that previous expeditions left behind but after a couple of dungeons I adapted to it.

The saving actually happens a lot. Even if you remove or equip a picto it saves it. I think what you meant is manual saves? That would be nice. Sometimes manual saves are great when you want to revisit a part of the game to experience a boss fight or cutscene over again.

The combat was my favorite part of the game. It actually made me wonder how the fuck no other company made turn based combat this dynamic before. The only big JRPG I can think of doing something like that is Legend of Dragoon but that was mostly for inputting combos and not so much on the defense side of things. I'd love for Sony to remake that game, especially after seeing the success of this title.

I want to try Metaphor. I think there's an eight hour trial on PlayStation. I still think my favorite JRPG of the last decade is Ys VII: Lacrimosa of Dana. Really vibed with that game. Loved the spirit of adventure and dinosaurs are always badass. The only other JRPG besides this one that I'll make room for this year is the remake of Trails in the Sky. Never got around to that series but I've heard this is the first one. Think it releases in September

The fact that I can force an auto save whenever I want makes the decision to not have manual saves even dumber.

I don't mind the input stuff, though it is beyond easy. I cannot remember the last time I messed one up, which kind of makes it pointless in my eyes, but it is what it is.

I don't know, everyone seems to love the dodge/parry stuff, but I just cannot get into it for very long. Fun at first, but tedious for me for long periods. Also I have no idea what I am doing wrong, but I will get perfect dodges or parries on an enemy group attack, but for some reason the other character gets hit full blast. A skill issue I am sure, but if all 3 are not moving at the same speed, that is just another design choice I do not like.

It is definitely a great game, and incredibly well made. I would listen to that soundtrack just for fun. Just does not resonate with me like everyone else calling the best jrpg in years or game of the year or what have you. (I do not have a game of the year so far, pretty slim pickings for me)
