It doesn't have to do with his roots but simply the way he's dispatched all of the guys he's faced. If you have a guy who is constantly destroying his opposition en route to a belt, interim or otherwise, people are going to hype him up. Pavlovich had a similar treatment back when he was on his run, and before both Tom and Pav you had Ngannou.

Lengthy Champ, had one of the most legendary beatdowns put upon him by a big star. One of the last remnants of the old guard, right before the UFC really broke into the mainstream.

I'm just saying, if you took his name and a fighter of today and asked ten random people if they recognized them, I honestly think Sherk would win out, or it would be a wash at worst. Might be my own bias, but I'd say the same for a guy like Dan Hardy, who was merely just in the mix during that era. I just don't see the same level of fame in this generation in comparison to those days, where even fighting a big star would make you somewhat memorable.

It's a product of oversaturation, I guess. Back then, you had monthly events with most being a showcase of the very best. Now it feels like there's an event every single weekend. There are too many fighters and fights, to really focus on who's who and where they're all at. It's like a Jackson Pollock painting.

Calling him future HW GOAT is definitely way overboard but I dont think that sentiment is very widespread at all. Maybe i'm just not noticing but I dont think the hype over him has been excessive relative to his performances. I really hope it doesnt get that way either, because even if he steamrolls Gane he still has a pretty long way to go before hes legitimately in the discussion as a H2H all timer.
