Why?

"In the context of diversity issues, NIPS executive board is currently discussing the possibility of changing the name of NIPS conference. We have formed a committee to examine all aspects of this question, and at the end of May, after the NIPS submission deadline, we will ask the whole NIPS community to input a suggestion for a potential new name."

One would think Nips would be less offensive than Japs. I think any national nickname that is an abbreviation of your nation's name is fair play. Brits. Aussies. Cans. Belges. Etc.
