I currently work out 3-4 days a week and train Brazilian Jiu-jitsu 2-4 days a week. I'm also training and compete in Scottish Highland Games. Before starting a legit strength program in May 2010, I had not really lifted weights for close to 20 years.

In May 2010, I tested my 5 rep max:

Bench: 205
Squat: 225
Deadlift: 255
SOHP: 125

I've made huge gains since starting:

Current PR's:
Bench: 1x315 - 2/8/2012 - Bench Press 1x315.MOV - YouTube
Low Bar Squats: 1x405 - 12/23/2011 - Squat 1x405 - YouTube
Deadlift: 1x475 - 2/20/2012 - Deadlift 1x475 - YouTube
SOHP: 1x205 - 12/27/2011 - Strict Overhead Press - 1x205 - YouTube
Push Press: 1x245 - 12/29/2011 - Push Press 1x245 - YouTube
Weighted Chins: 1xBW+115 (336 lb Total) - 5/2/2011 - Chinup BW+115 lbs (337 lbs Total).avi - YouTube

GOALS FOR 2013
Paused Bench Press: 300
Deadlift: 500
Squat: 440

I competed in my 1st Powerlifting meet in September 2012. Totaled 1158 @ 215. Here's the vid:

I competed in my 2nd Powerlifting meet in January 2013. Went 9 for 9 & totaled 1223 @ 215 (430,297,496). Here's the vid:

First! Good luck with your training this year. You're to going to crush that 500 deadlift soon.

Good luck in 2013 mate

You shall achieve those 2013 goals easily.

Good luck in 2013 buddy. Unless your plane goes down on the way to Hawaii you'll nail all of those goals.

Good stuff today - this is my last heavy deadlift day before the meet on 1/12. Felt great to set a PR! This is my 1st Deadlift PR since February 2012! Only 5 pounds, but I'll take it.

Felt even better because a month ago I did 0x475, 1x475, 0x475...

Here's the vid:

Happy New Log and congrats on the PR!

That red lighted 419 looked right on the border to me. Looked easy too.

And congrats on the PR

It was a good experience though, I know I need to be conscious of my depth & not get lazy. Hopefully its not an issue next time.

Congrats on the PR! How are you programming your deadlift?

Congrats on the PR! How are you programming your deadlift?

I've been doing basic 5/3/1 for the last 6 months for deadlift but really focusing on squats, to be honest. I'm going to make some changes soon to my deadlift programming, but haven't decided what exactly. I want more volume, so either 5/3/1 + singles or speed DLs or deficits.... OR I'll do some type of more direct progression.

Solid way to start the year.

Good luck with your training in 2013, man!

Thanks miaou!

Also here's some programming thoughts I wanted to jot down....

Here are the next competitions I have coming up. Not confirmed yet, probably won't do some of these, but this is the tentative calendar for the 1st half of the year:

1/12 - PL Meet, Camp Pendleton
2/16 - Queen Mary Highland Games, Long Beach, CA
3/21 - PanAmerican BJJ Championships
5/25 - ScotsFest Highland Games US Championships, Costa Mesa, CA
6/22 - Vista Highland Games, San Diego, CA

So with this in mind, I have a couple of goals that I'll implement after the PL Meet, which will help with Highland Games, BJJ & regular GPP:

1) Make BJJ a priority. OK, Maybe this won't help too much with Highland Games, but I'm going to try to start privates & training at some different gyms. Need 4x or more sessions each week. If I don't do this I won't be able to compete in March.

2) More Speed - I'm going to switch from SOHP to Push Press. Going to switch from Paused bench to TnG. Also going to implement more jumping, sprinting & plyos.

3) Diet - Working on eating smarter & tracking macros with consistency. Ideally I'd like to be able to compete in Heavyweight (207.5 lb with the gi) in March. This means I need to lose about 12 pounds over the next 3 months.

congrats on the pr! its awesome to be competing man, im so jelly

BJJ - 1 Hour "Special Guard Class"

Great class tonight. Instructor has added a "special guard class" to the schedule. We'll focus on a specific guard for a month, class is 3x a week with 1 technique or concept a week. This month is Open Guard, which is great for me, because mine needs a ton of work.

I would think open gaurd would suit you. Once you get use to giving up that sense of control a closed guard offers I think you'll love it. Let that hip strength you work so hard pay off.

It takes a lot.more out of you though.

Well I think my plan is to work as much open guard as I can for now & maybe I'll learn something...
