My ADD Training Log 2013

12/17/2013

Morning run - 3.19 miles, 34:11

I think I'm going to try to get a few runs in each week to help with my conditioning for Jiu-jitsu. BJJ is my priority for now, so I'm trying to plan a workout regimen around improving BJJ conditioning & recovery. At this point, strength is not holding me back. There's just not many guys in the 207 or 220 weight class for BJJ that can deadlift 500, squat 430, or bench 300. Especially in "Senior II", which is my age bracket.

For the next 4-6 weeks, my goal is to try to get some jiu-jitsu training in 4-5 days/week. I think I'm going to supplement that with LSD runs (like today) and sprinting or jumping workouts on other days. For strength, I may just try to throw on days where my schedule or the kids' schedule doesn't let me get to a BJJ class.

If I can fix my conditioning & fix some holes in my game, I'd like to do a few tournaments in 2014.

For Highland Games, I'm planning on February in Long Beach, April in Honolulu and May in Costa Mesa, CA.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Had a substitute instrucor today (Ricardo is in Brazil). This guy also has a black belt in Akido, so lots of work on wristlocks today. Fun stuff. I need to start looking for these more often.

Rolling went really well.

I'm a purple belt too, 4 stripes so getting close to brown, and one thing I've learned about BJJ and conditioning is that trying to beat a better guy will always make you tired, because you will start muscling to make up for the skill deficit. Sometimes you need to relax and let it happen. You will tap more, but you'll get less tired and learn more. I've really been trying to relax when I roll with the brown and black belts, and I find that I'm enjoying my training more and getting more out of it this way. Just my 2c. Good luck with your training!

Good luck with your goals calvus.
Oh, and how does in feel being Senior II? :icon_lol:

Thanks guys - appreciate the feedback :) Abnd, crza - I was senior II last year, so I guess it feels the same lol

3.03 mile run, 29:52 - nice run this am before breakfast. Kings MMA is officially closed this week, but Master Cordeiro is letting a few of us in for an open mat tonight. Should be fun.

Last week I wanted to get in the gym 4x, but due to family commitments (birthdays, christmas parties, shopping, planning, etc... I only made it in twice. One of my concerns about doing a January tournament is that I don't know if I can get in the gym often enough to be successful.

BJJ - 2 Hours

Sometimes you're the hammer, sometimes you're the nail. Basically got my ass kicked tonight. I really sucked. Don't know how else to put it. I was SLOW tonight. Kinda bummed. This was a "private" training session tonight, since the gym is closed. We had a black belt there, 5 purple belts & 3 white belts. I think we're going to do another one Thursday night.

I love holiday open mats. People who are away at grad school and what not, always come back home to roll, so I get to train with guys I haven't seen in a while. Going to a Christmas eve open mat tomorrow, I'd better rest up for it.

Sprints

5x20m warm-up
10x10m

THROWING
Open Stone
- 12.5 lb stone
7x standing throws
5x full spin throws

LWFD - 28 lbs
5x Full Throws

Light Hammer - 16 lbs
5x Throws

Light throwing session today. Haven't thrown anything in several months, so this was good to get back into it a bit. I think I need to do more sprinting, jumping & throwing because they will help with my explosiveness & power - especially as I age.

If I'm in town I'll compete at the Queen Mary Scottish Festival (Feb 15-16), but I might be in Hawaii that week. We'll see....

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Another Holiday session. Felt a little better today & had more success. Did some specific training, then rolled 4 or 5 5-minute rounds. Wore my new go today - it's a black Aesthetic gi. It looks sick, felt good - the pants are awesome (and it came with 2 pants!). Only complaint is that the arm holes are a bit tight around my underarms. I guess that's my own fault for being so jacked.

BW: 220.2

Fasted Run - 3.16 mi, 30:49, pace 9:45 min/mile

Felt decent this am, but not great. Knees bothered me a little. I want to get some LSS cardio in tomorrow as well, but I'll probably do a bike ride instead so that I'm not pounding my knees every day. I need to be comfortably in the 212-215 range by late January if I'm going to compete, so I'm also watching what I eat.

Also, I usually weigh myself 1st thing in the AM, prior to eating. This is when I'm the lightest - but I need to be able to make weight with the gi on, in the middle of the day. So I've definitely got some work to do.

Squats
5x135
5x185

Squats felt HEAVY. Haven't squatted in a while so that's expected. Gonna be sore. Did a good job on my diet today, making a salad & steak for dinner.

Got the blood flowing this morning. The weather lately has been absolutely beautiful! Temps have been in the low to mid-70s.

Well 2013 was a year of survival for me. Lots of personal challenges / issues made it tough to work out as consistently as I wanted to. With that said, I still had a lot of success.

I competed in a Powerlifting meet at the beginning of the year & won both the over 40, 220 division & the open 220 division with a 1223 total (430/298/496). All 3 lifts were PRs.

I also competed in a Highland Games competition, and won the "Men's B" Division, and set some PR's there.

So not a lot of comps in 2013, but the ones I did, I performed well at. So overall I'm going to chalk it up as a successful year & I'm moving on to 2014.
