My ADD Training Log - 2012

Nice!! Felt good didn't it?

It did! I need to go stone hunting tomorrow so I can start practicing again. I want to concentrate mostly on stones, hammer, and WFD since they are my biggest weakness. I easily matched my old WOB PR on the first attempt and was an inch away from a new PR. Not only that but I had my best caber tossing day after not throwing anything for a year. So I'm not worried about ignoring those two events.

BJJ - No gi - 1 Hour


I was the only person that showed up to no gi today, so I got a 1 hour private training session with a black belt. No rolling, we just drilled & drilled, then worked on 2 specific techniques. The first was a nasty choke from side mount, and the 2nd was a specific technique for taking the back from sidemount when the guy on the bottom tries to roll to turtle. Excellent training session.

No problems with my leg today. I guess the week off was perfect. I'm just considering the Smolov experiment as a couple of high-volume weeks & now I'm back to 5/3/1 on my squats now. I'll be squatting twice a week. I'll also be benching twice a week - looking forward to some gains before the PL meet on Jan 12th. I have 9 weeks.

Squats felt pretty good today, but I was talking to a buddy of mine right before the last set & ended up taking way too long of a break. As a result, the last set was all over the place, GM'd every rep - just ugly. Still tied a rep PR, though, so not bad. I'm up to 445 as my training max right now for squats on 5/3/1 - so these next 2 cycles won't be easy (408 is my current PR).

So 408 is my PR because that's the most I've ever successfully attempted. I attempted 420 at my PL meet, but got called for depth. I'm certain I'm good for more than 408. If I use the 1RM calculator, then 385x5 equates to a 1RM of 435, which I'd be pretty happy with. My schedule calls for me to do 425 in a couple of weeks, so I'm looking forward to that.

Noooooooooooo please tell me this isn't real!!! Oh god. I really try not to think about these things but sometimes it passes through my mind right before I'm about to squat

Don't know if it is real... I just grabbed it from a Google search for "squat fail". If it's any consolation, if it is real, it is clearly a pretty old picture and so presumably things like this would be pretty darn rare.

Good workout today, even if my head wasn't screwed on all the way. I forgot to take my pre-workout drink. Forgot my case for my iphone, so I had to listen to the crappy gym music. And I forgot chalk. Damn. The knurling sucks on the bar, so on my last set of deadlift my grip was giving my issues. 420 felt heavy as well, but since I haven't pulled anything in 6 weeks, that was expected.

Overhead press was feeling great until the set of 165. Not sure what happened here, just ran out of steam on the 5th rep, so I waited about 20 seconds & then did an extra set.

In other news, today must have been Smokin Hot Girl Day at the gym. I sure am glad I decided to lift today.

I think you are on to something there, there was a ton of hotness at my gym today too. No complaints from me.

BJJ - 1.5 Hours

Excellent training tonight! I really felt like I did a good job moving, breathing, defending & not panicking in bad spots. In specific training we drilled an armbar from mount - picked up some nice details. Then I got to spar with Zeb, who's a purple belt now. He's bigger, stronger & more technical than me (and just won Worlds at Blue Belt), but I defended well and didn't get submitted. So I'm pleased with that. Next I rolled with another blue belt and I controlled him well & put him in some bad spots, felt good about this one too. Last I rolled with another purple belt & got tapped twice, but felt like I still defended & moved pretty well.

We're having a Grand Opening of the new Testai Jiu-jitsu on Dec 1 & we're also having a belt ceremony & promotion. My instructor told me that I should be there - which might mean I'm getting my purple belt. Seems crazy & a little early to me, but would also be cool... Of course maybe I just heard what I unconsciously wanted to hear.

Great pulling. Must be nice to get back to that! Why haven't you deadlifted since Oct?
