My ADD Training Log - 2012

Dang, too bad about the hammie. Mines been bothering me for the past month or so now, tweaked it from a sumo DL. Doesn't hurt when I do any other movement though.. just when in a stretched position.

The ice in a bottle for the hamstring is a great idea Jaunty! I'm going to give that a try.

Also, nice pics! Looks beautiful.

Thanks man - mine is feeling a lot better today, plan on squatting later, we'll see how it feels.

Squat

5x135
5x160
5x205
3x245
5x265
5x305
10x345 <-- Rep PR!!

Bench Press
5x135
5x160
5x190
5x225

DB Rows
RH: 20x100
LH: 18x100

It feels so good to be hitting PRs again!! Squats felt great today. Bench felt pretty good too. And I hate DB Rows. But I did them anyway. At least 1 set...

Hamstring felt a little tight today, but nothing too bad. I think the hike yesterday was some really good active recovery. Hopefully I'll be able to deadlift on Wednesday & also get back to BJJ & throwing this week. Might make it to BJJ tonight, even if its just for drills.

It wasn't that long ago that you were lamenting the lack of PRs set so far this year. Did you change anything in particular, or have the gains just started coming back more or less on their own?

Hey calvus.

Was it in your log there was posted a video with a beautiful singer from Hawaii? spent 15 minutes looking, but can't find it.

Yeah - it was Anuhea. I love this girl...

Here's my favorite vid, where she's cruisin around NYC playing her ukulele :icon_chee

And here's 2 of her newer songs:

Yes, here's the post:

So I spent some time today reviewing my progress over the last 12 months. It really seems like I haven't made much progress in 2012 & I need to find out why. I am convinced at this point that I missed the deadlift attempt mentally. I think I can get it if I'm in the right frame of mind, so I'm not concerned about that at this point.

Here's what I found out from my research:

In the 2nd Half of 2011, I set 36 PRs (including rep PRs). First half of 2012, I have set 13. Big difference.

In the first 13 weeks of 2H11, I set 14 PRs, in the first 13 weeks of 1H12, I set 13. Not a big difference. I was on the same track. So in the 2nd 13 weeks of 2H12, I haven't set a single PR. What changed?

- I started doing more assistance work in the 2nd quarter of 2012. Maybe the extra volume isn't helping?

I tracked all the weeks I had with a workout dedicated to a specific lift. If I had multiple workouts in a week of a lift (becuase of MM2K or Smolov) I didn't count the extra ones. I would put a table in here, but can't figure out how to do a table, so I'll just discuss the results. In '11, I had a much bigger focus on overhead work, although all other number were very similar. Also, I've missed the same number of weeks due to injury, sickness or deload. And I guess I like to bench, I had more bench workouts than squat or deadlift. Note to self: "From now on, you like squat! Make squat your favorite!"

Also, I set 14 PR's in the 3rd quarter of 2011 working out 4x a week. I set 21 PRs in the 4th quarter while working out 3 days a week and squatting 3x a week. 2nd quarter of 2012 I've been working out 4x a week.

So with that said, I think I'm going to start in July working out 3x a week & probably squatting 3x a week as well. I also think I need to REALLY put some effort into figuring out what to do with my assistance work.

So I dropped my volume down considerably & tried to raise my intensity. I'm using the following formula: Recovery>Intensity>Volume. I took a couple of weeks off & now I'm 3 weeks into the new schedule which a modified 5/3/1 template where I squat & bench twice a week (Monday & Friday) and then do deadlift & Press on Wednesdays. One assistance exercise each day. I feel better & am starting to feel strong again, we'll see if this continues...

Hey Calvus, remember when I mentioned that I applied for a job in Hawaii? They mailed me a letter asking me my geographic preference.

1. Oahu
2. Hawaii (Big Island)
3. Maui (Lani & Molokai)
4. Kauai

Do you have any suggestions on what I should choose?

Outside of Honolulu, it's all small towns.

1. Oahu - This is where Honolulu is. Also has the most universities & the most people. The North Shore is on Oahu as well. The North Shore is very rural. You can get pretty much anything in Honolulu, it's like any large city, it's just in Hawaii.

2. Hawaii - Big Island is really cool, not as populated. Hilo is the biggest town (Where BJ Penn is from), but its pretty small. On the other side of the island is Kailua, which is smaller. Really good fishing off of Kailua. The big island is known for having an active volcano. I've never been here for work...

3. Maui is the 2nd most populated island. Maui is really beautiful. Kahului is the biggest town, I do some business here occasionally. Lahaina is where all the resorts on Maui are. The Road to Hana is pretty famous - lots of waterfalls & stuff.

4. Kauai is supposed to be the most beautiful island. I've seen pictures, but haven't been there. It looks amazing. Super romantic, lots of resorts.

What kind of job are you applying for?

I applied through the Dept. of Ed for a teaching job. I think I'll end up selecting all preferences because I think it might help me secure a position if they know I am willing to relocate anywhere I am needed. But it's still good to know where I could pick from if it becomes a done deal.

After some research, it looks freakin' EXPENSIVE to live there. It feels right though. I think I would really enjoy it.

Yes its very expensive. Expect to pay a lot for housing, groceries & gas. It's more expensive than Cali, and Cali is freaking expensive.

BJJ - 1 Hour

Took it easy tonight because of my hamstring, which is still a little tight, just did the drills & worked the techniques, no sparring. Worked on armbar defense and armbar transitions from the bottom. Nice class.

Just an ok workout today. Not great. Was a little concerned about my leg with deadlift, so didn't want to push things too hard. Leg felt ok - was a little tight, but no real pain. Press was feeling great until the last set. Was a little rushed & failed the first rep, then knocked out 4 tough ones, and almost fell backwards on the last one. set up was just all over the place. At any rate, the good news is that my leg is still improving. Planning on BJJ tonight & maybe an easy run this afternoon.
