Macon Blair to Write and Direct THE TOXIC AVENGER Reboot for Legendary

W9vH5u4.jpg

Macon Blair has been tapped to write and direct Legendary’s reboot of the cult classic “The Toxic Avenger,” sources tell Variety.

Legendary acquired the feature film rights in December and have quickly made the project a high priority at the studio. Lloyd Kaufman and Michael Herz of Troma Entertainment will serve as producers with Alex Garcia and Jay Ashenfelter overseeing for Legendary.

Kaufman and Herz produced the original 1984 comedy, set in the fictional town of Tromaville, N.J., and centered on a mild-mannered janitor at a health club who’s chased out a second story window by bullies and lands in a drum of toxic waste. The chemicals cause him to transform into the Toxic Avenger, who has superhuman size and strength and stands up to bullies and corruption.

“The Toxic Avenger” became successful after a long run as a midnight movie in New York City, leading to the sequels “The Toxic Avenger Part II,” “The Toxic Avenger Part III: The Last Temptation of Toxie,” and “Citizen Toxie: The Toxic Avenger IV.” The property also became a stage musical production, a children’s cartoon TV series, and a Marvel comic.

Blair, who spent the first half the decade in front of the camera in films like “Blue Ruin” and “Green Room,” recently moved behind the lens starting with his directorial debut, ” I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore.” It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival and won the Grand Jury Prize following rave reviews. He also starred and co-wrote “Small Crimes” and wrote Jeremy Saulnier’s “Hold the Dark.”

Netflix Developing Modern THREE MUSKETEERS Movie With Writer Harrison Query

All for one and one for Netflix. The digital streaming giant has picked up a pitch from Harrison Query for a modern take on Alexandre Dumas' classic adventure tale The Three Musketeers.

Eric Newman and Bryan Unkeless' Screen Arcade and Scott Glassgold and his Ground Control Entertainment will be producing the feature project.

The Three Musketeers, set in 17th century France, tells the story of a young man named d'Artagnan, who wants to join a fabled king's guard known as the Musketeers. He is rejected, but meets renowned musketeers Athos, Porthos and Aramis, becoming embroiled with them in an adventure involving court intrigue and espionage.

Details of the new take were not revealed, but it has been described as Mission: Impossible in tone. Sarah Bowen will oversee for Netflix.

This is the second project from Query picked up by Netflix. In 2017, the company made a million-dollar deal to buy his military-themed Warparty, which had Ridley Scott producing, Tom Hardy starring and Andrew Dominik directing and co-writing.

The new project continues the pitch-perfect record from Query and Glassgold: They've sold an adaptation of the Russian espionage best-seller Spy's Son to Cross Creek, as well as the exorcism thriller Incident at Fort Bragg to Lionsgate.

Screen Arcade, which has a first-look deal with Netflix, is developing The Watcher, based on an article from New York magazine's website The Cut and picked up by Netflix in a seven-figure deal. The company is also prepping a sequel to the Will Smith-Joel Edgerton cop fantasy Bright.

Angelina Jolie in Talks to Make Marvel Debut with THE ETERNALS

2WDzZxT.jpg

Angelina Jolie is getting ready to make her first foray into the world of superhero movies. The Oscar-winning actress is in talks to star in Marvel Studios' The Eternals, a superhero team adventure feature being directed by Chloe Zhao.

Jolie has chosen the Marvel project based on the Jack Kirby-created title about superpowered and near-immortal beings known as Eternals and a more monstrous offshoot known as the Deviants that were created by the cosmic beings called Celestials.

While details about the movie are being kept under wraps, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that one aspect to the story involves the love story between Ikaris, a man fueled by cosmic energy, and Sersi, who relishes moving amongst humans. It is unclear who Jolie will play. Marvel had no comment.

Zhao, an award-winning indie director behind the critical hits The Rider and Songs My Brothers Taught Me, will helm from a script by Matthew and Ryan Firpo.

While this will be Jolie’s first superhero movie, it is not her first comic book movie— she starred in the 2007 adaptation of Mark Millar’s Wanted.

Jolie is currently working with Marvel's parent company Disney on the upcoming Maleficent: Mistress of Evil, which was recently moved up to a release date this fall from spring 2020, and on the animation/live-action hybrid The One and Only Ivan, which she is also producing. The actress' upcoming projects also include Come Away, a fantasy drama from Brenda Chapman.

Mckenna Grace Nabs Starring Role in Jason Reitman's New GHOSTBUSTERS Movie

Who is director Jason Reitman gonna call for his Ghostbusters movie? The answer is Mckenna Grace, the 12-year-old actress currently onscreen as a young Carol Danvers in Captain Marvel.

Grace has nabbed a starring role in the new supernatural adventure movie from Sony that is serving as a sequel to the original Ghostbusters movies made in the 1980s by Ivan Reitman, Jason Reitman’s father.

The story, by Reitman and Gil Kenan, centers on four teens, one set older, one set younger, with a focus on one family in particular. Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard and The Leftovers’ Carrie Coon are already cast. Grace has been described as the ostensible lead, with Wolfhard playing her brother and Coon her single mother.

Plot details are being kept underneath a Manhattan firehouse. The project, which has been operating under the code name Rust City, is due to go before cameras this summer and is dated for a July 10, 2020, release. Ivan Reitman is producing.

Grace is on one of the hottest rolls a youngster can have in Hollywood. She is starring in Amazon’s coming-of-age movie Troop Zero, which premiered at Sundance earlier this year. She appears as the young Danvers in several flashbacks in Marvel, which is expected to cross the billion-dollar mark at the box office next week. She co-stars opposite Kiefer Sutherland in ABC’s Designated Survivor. And she will be back on the big screen as one of the stars in Annabelle Comes Home, New Line’s latest entry in its The Conjuring horror universe. Grace also appeared on Netflix’s horror series Haunting of Hill House.
