Mike Israetel - sage or egomaniac??

He said in his latest video I saw that if Gordon Ryan wants to get out from under you he doesn’t do a Turkish getup, he bench presses you. That is just flat out wrong, the more I listen to him the more full of shit he sounds

I actually have been Benched a couple of times by huge guys I was trying to roll with. Bloody embarrassing.

That said, Ryan will not be using brute strength or a TGU. At his level of skill, he has far more options.

In the end I suppose what I am saying he's useful, but he's a bit of a smug prick too.

This pretty much sums it up for me. I'd just add that he's no way near as funny as he thinks he is. I've seen videos where the rest of the crew are crying with laughter at some of his jokes. It just reminded me of the Sopranos when Tony's wife tells him that his crew only laugh at his jokes because they are scared of him or want something out of him.

Unless he's equating the straight arms used in the shrimp out, yeah he's wrong here

That’s right. Never said he was doing a tgu either, although I do like loading that movement pattern. It makes me feel more athletic and honestly helps me get up from the ground at work so much easier than anyone else as stupid as that sounds. In my opinion they are good secondary exercises but aren’t primary builders of anything.

Fair point, and as I said up-thread: YMMV.

Personally, I'd much rather spend my time training with barbells, that's all.

Enjoyed his lifts 10+ years back when he had hair & showing insane lifts on his old YouTube channel...

Thanks for sharing.

In that video he looks like those husky lifters who do nothing more than lift heavier and heavier everytime they hit the gym. I see those guys all the time. Impressive strength, sure but not exactly an attractive physique.

I'm more impressed by that one guy in green who is behind him in that video- slender and strong physique that looks good wearing anything.

Women are typically more attracted to the Chris Evans / Captain America physique than the Brock Lesnar physique

I think you're right but there's also an element of rarity going on.

It's a bit like women with ridiculously massive tits. Most men aren't attracted to that (maybe 1 in 10 are) but so few women are built like that (maybe 1 in 1000) that they get insane amounts of attention.

The few women who want a guy like Brock Lesnar far outnumber the men built like that so they probably get a lot of attention from women.

Yeah I hear that. I tend to use my kbs more when I end a bb cycle and wanna take some time off, I find that I’m using kbs less and less over the years but still see value in them

I retract what I say. After watching more videos of him he's definitely an egomaniac. His advice stops at "slow eccentric and big pause at the bottom for the stretch" and that's it

He's also literally killing himself with steroids by his own admission so there's that

I knew it. I'm good at picking up on these things

Case in point, and slightly off topic: The first Kanye West song I ever heard was Jesus Walks- this was very early in his career.

When it came on, I was driving and randomly heard it on the radio. After hearing the intro, then the lyrics, then how the song progressed, I knew at that moment that mofo was crazy.

I knew before any of my other friends knew- they thought I was the one jumping to conclusions

Lo and behold....

tbf people had been saying he was crazy for a long time
I remember when through the wire came out and people were all over him for surviving the car accident etc..
never liked that song tbh always found him to be a weirdo

I watch his YouTube clips but overall he seems okay.

Funny guy.

The KB stuff is just goal specific. Are you going to get jacked? No. Super strong? No.

Is it good for mobility, explosiveness and longevity? I’d say so.

He is a great source of information. He can be funny, but I also understand why certain people may not like his demeanor.

I personally like him, and like all humans, he is an imperfect person. His smug dickery should be taken in context.

One of my favorite things is that in many of his videos he has powerpoint slides put up that go over what points he is going to talk about. Newer videos don't actually use powerpoint, but it is the same idea. Makes it much easier to skip through and pick out what you want to hear instead of sitting through a 20+ minute video.

This made me think of a scene in the first season of Jersey Shore where Mike Situation is sitting on the boardwalk with J-Wow and another girl, maybe Snookie. And they're drooling over the huge guys they see (Gorillas I think they called them) and Mike keeps getting madder and madder telling them that the monster look is out and thin is in while they ignore him and check out the much bigger dudes.
