Marine Corps taking a hit for ending deal with UFC

sorry

* It doesn't really do* the UFC any harm

Good, sick of their commercials/QUOTE]

this

If I had the choice between Marine Corps commercials, and seeing the same Blue Mountain High commercial 14 times during an event. Or Corn Nuts. Or Assassin's Creed. Or whatever other hype-of-the-week is feeding the UFC their money.

I'd choose the Marines.

I just got out of the Marine Corps (I go off active duty tomorrow), and I honestly don't get that article. I know a lot of Marines that love MMA, but none of them watched because of the USMC sponsorship. Most of them made jokes at the commercials with the "elite war fighter meets elite cage fighter."

The fact that this is an article is surprising to me. The contract ended, they moved on. This stuff happens all the time. The fact is recruiting needs are different now than they were over the past years. All of the branches are doing this in some way - no idea why this is news.

I think someone made a comment about TUF: it is true that an active Marine was accepted to get onto the show a few years ago but the Marine Corps denied it. They said that what goes on in the house (the drinking and doing stupid shit like destroying the house) was not the image they wanted to be associated with the USMC. I can't say that I blame them. Any time something negative happens that gets media attention, it really does affect everyone. I can't say how many times I've seen protesters and been associated with something stupid one person did. Putting a Marine on a show where dumb shit happens all the time is almost inviting something like that to happen, even if the Marine wasn't involved.

I'm worried about this. I wonder if they will still show the UFC on the Armed forces channel. That was one of the biggest reasons why I liked the UFC as far as what they do for the military. Considering all of the ppv's were free to watch on the network for soldiers deployed.

It shouldn't. This has nothing to do with AFN. I remember getting the fights back in Japan in 2006. Sports is actually one of AFN's priorities, and the UFC would take huge hits if they even tried to get fights pulled from AFN.

I think everyone who ever saw those commercials made fun of that, such a terrible line

people like to be in control and exert influence... who knows what benefits they get - it could be as simple as some of the union leaders personally hate mma... its a fucking joke that some people bitch about it being too violent then go watch hockey or the NFL
Especially when the average NFL player lives to be 50 (and they play on average 2.5 years in the NFL), the average NCAA player lives to be about 60-70 (depending on the level of play), which is clearly younger than the average U.S. male lives (72 or 73).

Looking at MMA, Rand Couture looks plenty healthy and he's almost 50, the Gracies all look fine (Helio lived into his 90's!), Dan Severn is still very healthy despite having over a hundred fights and fighting into his 50's, Dan Henderson is still able to fight at a high level at 42, and so forth.

I hope Brian Stann (a former Marine) goes after the Marines for this. I really do.
Wow, they were actually swayed by the Culinary Union. I am disappoint, Marines.
Seriously, that mob boxing union is freaking stupid. I wouldn't be surprised if their next action was to violently attack some UFC-related people. Actually, I wouldn't be surprised if they threatened sponsors right now (although not the Marines, because they'd kick their butts).
that culinary mafia crap has gone too far already.
Hopefully someone catches their illegal business activities... including this one.

Sir I believe you are wrong, because in a video game, though you may die, there is no consequence for dying, you respawn and kill again, death is not a deterrent. You are rewarded for killing, and death is glorified by your high score.
I know what you're saying though, a pacifist probably isn't going to up and join the Forces because he played Call of Duty a couple times, there has to be a previous desire (or sociopathic tendency, desperation due to living conditions or something else like a patriotic desire) that may be further fueled by the propaganda, but it's still propaganda.
If you've seen the ads where they show a futuristic soldier in a nighttime special op, which is clearly portrayed in a video game style, and then they seamlessly blend into a present day marine on an op, you should know what I mean. This is clearly done to force an association between the thrill of killing, excitement of playing with guns and toys, etc, to being a Marine.

Actually, that's more like the military influencing the video game industry than the other way around. That technology has been in development for decades.

Also, I'm sure that people that are aware of death in the real world can understand that eating green mushrooms won't give them extra lives, unless of course they eat enough green mushrooms.:icon_chee

I've always had a great handle on my alcohol. It's one of my few shining qualities...

But the number of alcoholics in the marine corps, and probably in the other branches, is staggering. My roommate at MOS school in Camp Johnson used to do shots of discount liquor before PT in the morning. Craziest thing I've ever seen...

Camp Johnson would drive most to alcoholism. I used to smash 5ths of Jack Daniels wake up 5 hours later, drink some red bull, and fill my camel back with gatorade before runs. Good times.

its not like the fertittas can disallow unions - every workplace has a right to unionize, do you know how they are able to keep unions out?
They have a right to keep unions out by employing people. There's not a Nevada or Las Vegas law that forces you to hire union workers.

There's also the fact that the Fertitta brothers pay their workers better than most, if not all, Vegas casinos. If they were unionized, their workers would probably get paid less, and the mobster lawyers at places like the Culinary Union would get a huge chunk of cash for doing nothing.

Simply put, this isn't construction work where non-union workers frequently get paid crap wages and work in crap conditions. This is work where unions minimally help. I know from my mother being a teacher for 25 years (and going from non-union districts to a union districts) that union teachers frequently get paid less than non-union lawyers. Somewhere, somehow, fat cat lawyers want their hands on every dollar they can get.

Agreed. I'll take that cheesy "elite" line over most UFC programming commercials any day! XD
Since Zuffa owners, the Ferttita brothers, own casinos that aren't unionized, they've been targets of the Culinary Union. Basically, if you're a company without unionized workers in an industry that has unionized workers, to them, you're taking money away from the union. And they'll use any means they can to get their way.

And unfortunately, unions have sway when it comes to politicians. I'm guessing they got to the Secretary of the Marines or Defense for this to happen.
Maybe they gave the Secretary of the Marines and/or Defense a good-looking mistress, instead of the one General Petraus had.

that makes sense, but then i guess ultimately the problem is still there - as you described, you left for more money

so you would think ujnions would coordinate and tell people to get the casino to stop wasting money on employee training and to get more money in the pockets of the employees

I left for more money, but my job was filled before I officially left. There were 9 people applying for it when I got the job, and my resume was way too strong to take a minimum wage job at the time. I just wanted to work in a sports book because I got to watch sports all day and talk gambling. What I'm trying to say is that they have no need to pay more for that position, even if I personally needed more money in the long run. I had coworkers that had been there for years and were very happy. There were also general tips split between us and occasional individual tips handed to you by a regular customer who just won big. I had one guy hand me 200 bucks in an envelope after he won 10,000 and that was the equivalent of three days pay.

As a brit, I found the whole MAREEENS DA BES OF DA BES stuff rather trite, but when it boils down to it those guys are in a country they don't know getting shot at for congress and politicians. I hope that any benefits the Marines got from the UFC, like fighters visiting them or discounted or free tickets carry on as a gesture of good will and I would hope that any support the UFC gave them was because they wanted to improve their lives and not for publicity.

Good, now I don't have to listen to all their cringe worthy nonsense while I'm watching the fights.

Isn't the culinary union what's been stopping events in New York? or whereever the fark it was

OHHHhhhhhh no.

SHIT this makes me angry, so very very angry.

simply, the owners of the UFC also own the largest non union casino in vegas, so the culinary union puts pressure on people involved/support the UFC.

they hope by putting pressure on the UFC, the fertitas (owner of UFC) will finally give up and allow unions into the casino.

basically extortion.
Extortion is commonly used by the powerful and rich to force their will on everyone else. Seeing as how most 1st world governments help, protect, and build around the rich who donate to our fraudulent politicians more than any other group of people, this should come as no surprise.
Good, now I don't have to listen to all their cringe worthy nonsense while I'm watching the fights.
You still will, it just will be other annoying ads instead. Expect MetroPCS commercials more.
