Crime Maine shooting - 18 dead

Pretty lax gun laws up here all around. Its a rural state, lots of hunters. Lot of tourism involving hunting, etc.
Yea that is what I thought. One of my good friends live up there and I was under the impression Maine was real loose with gun laws. Nice place but parts of it feels like the ends of the world.

Depends how you look at it, I guess. To me, its one of the last normal places left. Smaller and smaller every passing year though.

Here is the full report

LEWISTON, Maine (AP) — Both the Army Reserve and police missed opportunities to intervene in a gunman’s psychiatric crisis and initiate steps to seize weapons from the spiraling reservist responsible for the deadliest shootings in Maine history, according to the final report released Tuesday by a special commission created to investigate the attacks, which killed 18 people.

The independent commission, which held 16 public meetings, heard from scores of witnesses and reviewed thousands of pages of evidence, reiterated its earlier conclusion that Maine law enforcement officers had authority under the state’s yellow flag law, but didn’t use it, to seize reservist Robert Card’s guns and put him in protective custody weeks before the shootings.

The 215-page report also faulted the Army Reserve for failing to do more to ensure Card’s health and deal with his weapons. And it pointed out that no one used New York’s red flag law to initiate steps to seize the gunman’s weapons when he was hospitalized last summer, even though the law had been used on non-New York residents before.

I am just curious....we have had military vets since the beginning. We have had guns from the beginning. We have had mental illness as well. Why is this such a thing now? I am not blaming guns, because in areas without guns, people use knives. In NYC Homeless use Hammers or pipes. What is going on where people have so little concern for life?

If you're a total fuckup loser, the easiest way to get your 15 minutes of fame is to do something horrific like this. It's as simple as that.

All these guys are losers. That's the common thread. This was their only hope for noteriety.

Young people nowadays think you're famous or you're nothing.

It's also why so many young women in their 20s are doing onlyfans and tiktok/instagram slutty pics. Because for girls the easiest way to get famous is to be a skank.

there are a ton of scholars and thinkers/philosophers making the case that this is all related the what they are calling the "crisis of meaning". I have become fully convinced that they are correct. even though many of them are atheists they all think that what is happening is the direct result of losing cohesive religious worldviews that embedded us in deep shared moral values and purpose and contextualized our lives in an overall narrative that was fulfilling and satisfying for everyone in a given society. people felt included and embedded in an entire narrative and purpose.

the loss of all of this and the spell of materialism that resulted has inevitably lead to nihilism for MANY. there is no purpose, no end goal, no afterlife, no anything. we just live and die and are purposeless under the spell of materialism. many people will not thrive under this worldview.

What does that make the men who consume those images and media?
In my experience it turns some of them into young men who feel entitled to date a chick way hotter than they deserve and with standards so high they can never possibly get a girl.

Would you explain more into the "just now" in your post?

I see similarities with Charles Whitman in 1966. The sniper in the tower. Even though it was more than fifty years ago, you can see many of the same stress stimulus and warning signs.

I think the commission report mostly focuses on the inaction and neglect of the army and other organixations. I wonder if it is that simple or if it skips the larger issues of access to mental health

Do you not see the irony for taking such a harsh tone with the women who create something while completely ignoring the men who consume it? Pay for it? Create the market need for it?

No. Gay guys would pay to watch videos of me jacking off. I choose not to do it.

The internet made everyone entitled. Comparing others who basically live a fantasy life to themselves, and thinking that is the norm. I feel for the younger generation in dating. Both sexes seem absolutely delusional, and won't listen to reason.

As time went on gun culture went from viewing them as a serious tool for serious situations to today where guns are have been perverted into a weird cultural and political identity politics prop overused and overrepresented in almost every aspect of society and media.

That shitty culture around guns mixed with an American capitalist approach to marketing them to everyone and selling them to as many people as possible has armed society to it's teeth while convincing it that guns aren't serious tools but props that belong in all these situations and are answers to all these problems when really they aren't.
