well incorporating it into the price of the item would definitely be the better option as it doesn't disincentivize tipping. but at least they're telling you the truth about what it's for. the modern business model of restaurants is so inflated and broken.

Another thing I assume should be illegal. I went to a diner recently and they had a note on their counter stating that they charge 8% more if you don't use cash because they need to pay for their debit/cc reading service.

Since when did restaurants start charging each customer for their bills on top of their food/service.

The product price already increased. Most corporate chain restaurants are padding profit for executives and shareholders as it is. Smaller restaurants and/or tipping establishments are merely trying to stay afloat in an oversaturated market. Like the smaller hardware stores they're going to have a hard time competing with corporate chains, unless they find a local niche market that sustains them.

It's not just Americans and it's not just recent either. Street food is pretty common around the world and restaurants have been a thing since ancient Egypt and Greece.

Street food is a bit different though because its not as big of a production as restaurant consumerism is. Like walking around a city you're visiting and grabbing a bite, it makes a bit of sense considering you're actually walking, active, etc. What I'm referring to is the notion of going out to eat as a destination itself. You're not eating because you're hungry necessarily in response to moving around, you're eating because it's the "thing to do." Like look at the absurdity of the restaurant bars. I used to work in one. We have car dependent infrastructure everywhere, and then someone got the brilliant idea that bars and restaurants should be the same thing. Sure go out with your kids and have a few drinks. Then drive them home lol. Look at dinner menus with endless appetizers. Its just a largely monetized aspect of wanting to capitalize on people wanting to spend time with their families. Last time we went out I got a steak from BJ's Pub. To be honest when my wife makes steak, burgers, or kebabs it's a much better meal for a fraction of the cost.
