Economy Trump to impose $100,000 fee per year for H-1B visas, in blow to tech

Truth is, with AI advancements, low and mid-level tech workers are going to become obsolete within the next 5 years. What once was a valuable skill won't be.

We may not agree on many things, but we do agree on this...

I agree that he shouldn't penalize schools for allowing anti-Israel protests, but I don't consider the 100K fee anything but a bitch slap to crooked companies profiting off cheap labor.

What they currently do is almost like the tech equivalent of underpaying Mexicans to do farm work or roofing/construction, except applied to Indians + an added problem of nepotism when Indians are given the authority to hire/fire.

India is super poor and has 1/8 of the world's population. It's practically an unlimited supply of people to exploit for cheaper labor for every job in existence.

Only bring foreigners in for real shortages IMO, and this seems like a step towards that.

100K might be excessive though? I have no idea what a proper amount would look like.

I'd go 1 step further and apply all the revenue collected to scholarship programs to train US citizens to do the same jobs
it should be 1 billion dollars, why the fuck would a COUNTRY give a FOREIGNER a JOB? have we lost our minds? what the fuck is a country then, a playground for rich assholes to exploit and rape while us nice gullible suckers pray for it to end?

<mastermind>

I agree with importing to fill a shortage of essential workers (like doctors, nurses), but only if absolutely necessary.

For all the $$$ we send to foreign countries, and all the $$$ we waste on bullshit, we can definitely afford to train a lot more of our own people

Most of the money the US wastes is directed upwards to people who don't need it and who then store it in offshores out of reach.

Its hard to understand basic economics i know, ergo why the world is so fucked up because morons will believe stupid ass solutions that don't work.

People assume that jobs are a fixed position and that companies in the case of labor shortage have infinite margin values to shed money to hire personnel, you can see a lot of these opinions here.

"if the person is worth it they can pay the fee"

So if the person is unworthy what happens? "hire American" and what if Americans don't want to work these jobs at given payment level "they can pay more then" but what happens if the position itself doesn't generates the margin values to pay more? Simply, the position either gets outsourced abroad or is eliminated.

Labor is just another commodity in the end, this reminds me of Trump tariffs on steel and aluminium, they just fucked up American jobs because a lot of American industries have to pay for overpriced aluminium and steel, while those that produce abroad don't.

TLDR version

labor doesn't exists in a vacuum, if you rise one price via artificial shortage someone has to pay the difference.
So people don’t want skilled engineering positions…. Why exactly? The pay is low? These are the best and most desirable jobs in our economy who wouldn’t want that lol

H-!B visas will now cost the candidate or employer $100,000. Pretty certain this is happening to tank Silicon Valley such is his vendetta against Gavin. But here's the kicker, Lutnick told everyone from The Oval Office it was a yearly fee when it's a one time. What with this and Rubio threatening to take American passports away no wonder everyone's in a state of turmoil.

And now this shit starts happening:

Is that all you got from what i said? no wonder the founding fathers were so scared of the rule of the majority

I don't think it has much to do with Gavin and I think tech companies were abusing the hell out of these visas and something needed to be done about it. I'm kind of against importing migrants just to undercut american labor.

I also don't care much that the migrants who took advantage of the system are now upset that the jig is up

It’s established they paid them shit. They can come over and work. We can use them but you gotta pay them the same as their counterparts.

Isn't there already an established thread about this topic?

@cincymma79 Do you recall which visa Melania came over on? I know she had some untruths with her education but not sure which one it was.

Husband came over on an O visa which is pretty much rock star status and he doesn't know how much it cost his employer but I imagine it was pretty steep being he got it fast tracked and done in a month. I highly doubt it was 100k though. There weren't experienced Americans to do the job and being he was such an advocate for our city in Virginia I'm sure he would rather have employed someone more local.

What's happening with the Trump Gold Card I wonder?

Do you think you’re smarter than me or something? 27% of engineers work as engineers the rest work as other positions I’m sure a couple of them are qualified of the literal millions of American engineers who don’t do engineering work in America. These companies aren’t making life-saving drugs. They’re inventing apps and Facebook. It’s 100% profit driven. They should be forced to hire the citizens of the country you know like every other country in the entire planet

You don't think only America hires foreigners? Lol.

- THis post is the proof that we pro-wrestling fans are far brighter, bro.

This is why I fell in love with both the software and hardware side of electronics as a child. I fix computers and electronics for a living

No, just less willfully ignorant

27% of engineers work as engineers the rest work as other positions I’m sure a couple of them are qualified of the literal millions of American engineers who don’t do engineering work in America.
Ok, but is that going to be good or bad for the economy and the general population? who the fuck knows.

These companies aren’t making life-saving drugs. They’re inventing apps and Facebook. It’s 100% profit driven.
These companies are absolutely dominating and leading the world in digital services, they know what they are doing.

They should be forced to hire the citizens of the country you know like every other country in the entire planet
They do hire American, and you may not even know if American jobs may or may not be lost as a result.

The idea that artificial scarcity leads to better outcomes is just economic mumbo-jumbo, im sure tons of foreign countries are salivating at the idea of creating digital hubs.

And even so at the very least Trump ought to establish some rules not "you got to pay but only if i decide to".

even the playing field
