There have been a few agencies that have experimented with a 3/13.5 schedule. One of those hours was mandatory physical fitness. That would be my ideal schedule. Gym or run for an hour and work 3/12.5's.
The problem with physical fitness requirements is on the job injuries, pregnancies, etc. What do you do with someone who gets hurt and gains weight right before the fitness test and can't pass.
I'm in good shape but if I had to take a physical fitness assessment right after coming back from my broken ankle, I would have for sure failed. Or do you accommodate the fatties and move them into a specialty like detectives or something like that? Then you freeze up mobility.
But with all the job factors included, there is no reason a cop should not be able to run, sprint and do a short fight and not look like they are gonna have a heart attack.
