Law enforcement is most obese profession - study

Yes, you do make up days. Rules? Pass whatever standards are required and you're on your way, as you said, a liability on the streets otherwise. Take as long as you wish, I suppose, you won't be that liability if you're not on duty. Scaling for age is dangerous. I don't want an out of shape old fart showing up if, heaven forbid, I need to call one for emergency purposes, and then having to worry about him or the potential situation he's going to put me in. There needs to be a standard for all to conform to. It doesn't have to be difficult unless you want it to be.

I grew up downhill skiing in whistler, I am aware of physio and many types of mobility injuries.

Up to a point the experience of an older officer trumps any physical fitness limitataions

LoL. Try eating rotten sandwiches that have been sitting in the hot ass trunk of car in the middle of a summer

I'm guessing most cruisers have AC. Is it really an unworkable burden to bring your lunch............ really?

I went to NYC over the Canadian Thanksgiving, and before entering one of the underground tunnels I saw about half-a-dozen members of New York City's finest standing on the side. Myself and all other passengers in the car were in disbelief at what we saw: not one cop in that group weighed less than 250 pounds. By far they were the fattest policemen we've ever seen, and this was in the northeast US. There's zero chance of them being able to chase down a fleeing perp. No wonder they're so trigger happy.

My pimp hand is strong, I just have never used it. I have never punched or struck anyone in the face in almost 13 years as a leo, and most of my "fights" are little more than spirited wrestling matches with a few exceptions.

You don't sound like police material to me. You need to start breaking faces and claiming to feel threatened.

Dude stop with your personal vendetta. You dislike the police because you got arrested. I don't think we need to remind people that you clearly brought your troubles with the law on yourself.

What happened to him?

Scaling age is dangerous? What about gender?

So basically you want police departments made up primarily of young men, ages between 21-35?

Just make sure to shout "Quit trying to grab my gun!!!!"

Then you can go full UFC on them.

I never seen any vehicle with AC in the trunk. Front passenger seat is out of the question because I have a partner. Backseat is a no go because it's for prisoners.

Geez you guys are getting weak around here. A thread about fat cops that goes 133 posts and not one single pic of how this shit works.

They can always do their physical fitness tests (PFTs) similar to how army/military do.

Sliding scale based on age and sex. Slightly easier for women. Easier as you get older. Once you fall below the 5th or 10th percebtile on sliding scale, you're cut for streetwork and get transferred to paperwork. Everyone who deals w suspects physically should be able to pass the pft.

Totally what I was saying. You should run for president.

so how do you expect a 40 year old cop who has been on the force for 20 years with a bad back from on the job duty to perform the same standard as a 23 year old rookie fresh out of the academy? There is no such thing as a one size fit all fitness test in law enforcement or even the military.

Maybe you need to elaborate a little bit more on "There needs to be a standard for all to conform to"

when i get down and dirty trying to restrain a resisting suspect, i'd rather have a 250 lbs out of shape cop to be my back up than a 140 lbs cop who runs marathon for fun. A foot pursuit would have been a different story.

i'm a field training officer for my department. One of the best rookies I've worked with was a female cop who stands at an imposing 5'2" 115 lbs. she is weak/slow as crap, but she can diffuse a hostile situation like nobody else i've ever seen. turns out she used to work as a high school teacher for inner city.

If he has a bad enough back preventing him from attaining a bare minimum, he isn't fit for duty now is he? A standard minimum isn't much to ask considering the responsibilities of the profession. This doesn't have to be difficult, unless you want it to be.

Edit: For clarity, I'm not asking or talking about Olympic caliber fitness, but a standard amount of basic shit like push ups/situps(and not those girly kind)/pullups/etc. Oh and using your gut to cut the range of motion doesn't count either.

There have been a few agencies that have experimented with a 3/13.5 schedule. One of those hours was mandatory physical fitness. That would be my ideal schedule. Gym or run for an hour and work 3/12.5's.

Daily exercise is good but nutrition and portion control is still the problem. Night shift working & inadequate sleep can cause the desire to eat more, burn less calories and feel less satiated. Shift work has many flaws. There are also many obese nurses, factory workers, truckers etc, basically any occupation that is correlated with night & shift working.

Yup, nothing like a little extra weight when you need to lean on someone.

By obese, do they mean like, actually obese or the, "you're six foot one and weigh more than 173lbs, so according to the BMI scale you're obese" kind of obese?
