Keosawa's Powerlifting Log

Thank you all. I'm here in Des Moines now--tomorrow will hopefully go well. I'll post updates throughout the day.

Hey man, GJ at the meet regardless, 1267 is damn awesome and very impressive. However, do you think the unusual way you went about "peaking" this time had something to do with your misses? Will you do it again? Perhaps modify it slightly? Or just go back to a more 'standard' way of peaking?

Possibly. My strength was there on this day, but I think I was really rusty on my squats.

When I prepare for July, I will look towards other ways of peaking for a meet and will try something new. At the very least, I'm not going to allow nearly two weeks to go by between my last squat session and my meet.

Here are our team's results from this weekend's meet:

Alvarez, Kevin (220). 595 squat, 358 bench press, 628 deadlift, 1581 total. 6 lbs. from an Elite 220-lb. total (1587). Ranked #29 in U.S. at 220 lbs. 8.5475 Coeff.
Anderson, Chris (198). 474 squat, 237 bench press, 518 deadlift, 1229 total. 7.0296 Coeff.
Foutris, George (242). 467 squat, 249 bench press, 562 deadlift, 1278 total. 6.6253 Coeff.
Joseph, Logan (181). 287 squat, 204 bench press, 463 deadlift, 953 total. 5.6662 Coeff.
Keough, Kyle (148). 413 squat, 292 bench press, 562 deadlift, 1267 total. Elite 148-lb. total (1124). Ranked #5 in U.S. at 148 lbs. 8.4127 Coeff.
Mohamed, Monty (181). 309 squat, 193 bench press, 480 deadlift, 981 total. 5.8924 Coeff.
Poage, Nate (148). 425 squat, 204 bench press, 507 deadlift, 1135 total. Elite 148-lb. total (1124). Ranked #21 in U.S. at 148 lbs. 7.5938 Coeff.
Thompson, Seth (198). 303 squat, 231 bench press, 469 deadlift, 1003 total. 8-for-9 in first meet, 5.8071 Coeff.

Some random thoughts regarding everyone's performances:

- Kevin Alvarez lost to another 220-lber. for best lifter and ended up with the second-best coefficient of the meet. He was also six pounds from an Elite total at 220. He's one of three lifters who are now ranked in the top 50 in their weight class from our team. He has a killer squat (this was without knee wraps, too) and a very solid deadlift.

- Seth Thompson is a new team member, and he was competing in his first meet. I was really impressed with his technique and his attempt selection. He missed his final bench press but hit everything else with ease. For a young kid, totaling over a thousand and going 8-for-9 is an awesome accomplishment.

- Nate Poage is a really awesome squatter who's also a bit of a beanpole (he's 5'8"). He set a PR in the squat and got his first Elite total as a lifter. When he fills out a bit, he's going to be a force at 165 lbs. I think the plan, for the time being, is for him to compete at 148 lbs.; look for him to break 1200 by the end of the year.

- Chris Anderson competed in the teenage division at this meet. He's got an awesome squat, and his deadlift is fast improving. He went 5-for-9 on this day and really struggled on bench, but he's capable of 1300+ for a total.

- George Foutris had a lot left in the tank on his deadlifts, I thought. He's also a pretty good squatter, and his only issue is that his bench press sucks. He's working on it diligently, and he made strides on it today. He's another lifter who will cross 1300 lbs. for us very soon.

- I expect Monty and Logan will break 1000 lbs. soon; hopefully it will happen as soon as next meet. Both really struggle on bench (a theme for our team) and need to improve there to boost their total.

Sounds like an awesome outing for your team

Must really help being surrounded by so many dedicated strong lifters

Challenge Tasir to a kickboxing match and feel his wrath.

It was, jester. Our guys did pretty well overall. A few of us disappointed, but we mostly did a good job.

And I will do no such thing, Jake.

UIPowerlifting - YouTube

That's the link to our team's youtube page. I don't want to post their videos here--because youtube will say "As Seen on Sherdog," and the videos aren't for me--but you're all welcome to go browse. I've only uploaded two so far, but they all should be up there soon.

Just do it. His shin bones are like blades that will just dice right through you.

It isn't in the least. We have connected shins with shin guards on and its still hurt like a bitch.

It is just funny to me because you would never guess it by looking at him.

Or by talking to him. He's very mild-mannered, but I know better. The kid does not know how to strength train whatsoever, but he is as tough as nails. I will never forget his first meet, when he failed his third deadlift attempt, then went to the warm-up room and pulled it; it was one of the coolest--and stupidest--things I've ever witnessed in a gym. If he only learned how to train optimally and not kill himself every day, he'd really make some gains.

Good lifting Keo! Every time a member here posts about their meet I want to start competing so bad.

What is holding you back?

Financial struggles right now. As embarrassing as it is to admit, I'm moving back to my parents this summer cause I'm constantly broke. I'm not moving for competition reasons but once I do move back to my parents I will have more opportunities to compete frequently in highland games (which I already do) and to start in powerlifting.

I understand completely. Powerlifting is, unfortunately, a fairly expensive sport. I'm sorry to hear that, man.

Also, I forgot to mention on my log that I put on an enormous amount of weight from carb-loading this weekend; I was 164.6 last night. Thankfully, my weight's starting to return to normal, as I was 157 after training today. It'll probably drop once I start returning to my normal diet.
