It's strange that the interim champ must defend his belt against real contenders and the real champ can fight almost retired fighters.

"Champ" who will only fight a 42 year old who hasn't won in 3-4 years is up there for the biggest joke in combat sports history.

Terrible look for Jon Jones and the UFC.

I mean we don't like it as fans, but Jones gets the right to call it when he wants to call it. He's earned that much.
That said Tom has two out of the box options to get a fight.
One he could get to Jons pride and ego. Cuz it sounds like he's quitting because he knows he can't fight like he used to. But that's the problem Jones wanted to fight when it was easy for him. Now that he knows he's getting older he doesn't want to challenge himself. Because he's afraid of getting sent to the shadow realm even though he's never really been close to it in an actual mma fight. Start going in on how he's a safe fighter only taking fights he believes he can easily win.
His other option would be to offer him something he doesn't have. Make it benefit him. He's technically not an undefeated fighter. But I'm sure he'd do anything to be Tom should petition the athletic commission as hard as he can. To help get that loss off his record, now Tom doesn't really have the means to do so, but he should figure it out. And state that for the rest of his career he will fight on his behalf. Because he wants to fight undefeated Jones.
But right now Tom doesn't move the needle for Jones so if he wants the fight he's gotta figure it out.
Or last option would be too go full heel and storm the cage after the Jones v stipe fight. And call him out for ducking right before he gets to retire. To always put doubt in the fans mind. And get his ego going, where he feels he has to defend his honor.

I don't really care if he wants to only fight Stipe, that's fine. What isn't cool is holding up the division and the title while you do that.
I also think despite having such a great career.. Jones is just insecure. I actually think he could beat Aspinal.. and it would be a big fight and a great win.. but he doesn't seem so sure of himself. Which is honestly a sign that it is time to retire. If he wants to leave the spot without a loss, might as well just leave now. The Stipe fight coming off multiple surgeries might not be a gimme.
