Is there anyone here who ignored / actively disrespected the Pledge of Allegiance at School?

When I was kid (about 10 maybe), I was at a Lions football game and the National Anthem started. I didn't stand up right away and this dude behind me yanked me out of my seat and said "show some fucking respect". I realized at that moment how important this issue is to some people.

On one hand i think this country is a joke and it's full of people I despise and therefore I want my own country.

On the other hand I am a blue-blooded American and would like to see a cohesive nation of like-minded people who respect the nation, the flag and take care of it.

But to be honest with all the different groups living in this nation we will either turn into Yugoslavia or we will look like south africa and brazil had a baby, either way it's not a good look.

I personally have ignored the pledge of alliance to the US my whole childhood.
To be great you need to take in great, not ignore it. To be great you can't be jealous of great, you have aspire to be great.
Think big, not small, not wide... think... American.

Make Europe into Germany. Be all that you can be, German Joe.

So I'm a US Marine, I love this country, but I will say that I absolutely hate the pledge of allegiance. It is brain washing kids who literally don't even know what the words mean! Don't support it or believe in it one bit. I hope they grow up to love the country as much as I do but it is absolutely wrong way to go about it

I always said it, hand over heart. Still do. Don't have an issue with anyone who doesn't. If I'm pledging allegiance to the country and the liberty/justice for which stands...part of that is pledging allegiance to the idea that it's ok when other people express their liberty differently than I do.

It's weird that people who are so insistent on others respecting the symbols of American values aren't as attached to the meaning of the values behind the symbols.

Do we want people to just say the words or live the meaning?

You said it perfectly, they're saying the words without any idea of what they mean. As for the first half of you saying that you say/recite it: do you still say it?? (Assuming you are out of school) because my post a second ago it's literally meant to brain wash impressionable kids who don't know what it all means

Is that just because Belgium wasn't good enough at soccer during your upbringing that you didn't get to hear it enough to memorize it?
I don't watch soccer but it might be a reason. My family wasn't the "die for your country" breed. They always instilled a healthy scepticism towards jingoism.

Are you a French speaker or a Flemish speaker?

In Canada we definitely learn the anthem in school, but I think a lot of kids know the anthem from watching hockey games, because it's played before every match. I knew it before I went to school.

Nope. Still stand with hand over heart and will until i die.

I dont understand why people object so much to showing allegiance to your country. Im very proud of our country and very happy i live hear comlared to many other countries. I know we have problems but we are not as bad off as a lot of the world.

I’m glad we don’t have such mandatory shows of patriotism here , just seems crass and a little bit unworthy of the sentiment it’s supposed to expressing .

If you want someone to be patriotic you have to give them a country to be proud of, which is a problem because leaders are consumed with greed and corruption. Taking the brainwashing route is far simpler.

So do you still currently recite the plege of allegiance as an adult? Like do you do it in the morning when you wake up or when you get to work?

I always stood up for the pledge and would probably do so now as I do feel a great sense of patriotism to the country (I stand for the anthem). I also have zero issue with people who refuse to do it. Quite frankly there are other common views that I find far more unpatriotic and sitting/kneeling for the pledge/anthem. In fact, sitting/kneeling could be a show of patriotism.

I don't care if people stand or kneel or protest loudly as long as it is a conscious choice but for some reason it bugs the shit out of me when people just sit and chit chat and ignore what is happening.

I never thought about it til just now but since the NFL fiasco, I bet kids have been doing this. Do they even do the anthem in schools?

Yes, and tons of kids don't stand or whatever. Sorry. I'm referring to the pledge of allegiance, not the national anthem. But as far as the pledge, they ignore it, goof off. I have three kids and they tell me about it. Nothing done about it. When I was a kid they would have physically whipped your ass. Although I do remember one boy who would sit quietly who was a Jehova's Witness, I believe. He caught grief, but nothing heinous and that was 40 years ago. But he was the only one I ever saw or knew of through all of school.

All the pretend morons here who say they reject the pledge of allegiance still love government control and still can't imagine life without government.

It's like the 30 year old man who refuses to work and lives with parents, but says he hates them.

The pledge of allegiance was written by a socialist. But all these pretenders here are socialists too. They love government.
