Is Aldo the GOAT takedown defense artist?

Considering how deadly his stand up is, how many opponents gameplan was to take him down, how many quality grapplers he fought. I feel like it eclipses guys like GSP/Usman/Khabib because many opponents rather stand with them.

When you have to grab the fence to avoid getting taken down by 4 feet Mendes and almighty Mark Hominick takes you down and puts you on your back for 5 minutes, I ‘ll have doubts that said guy will shake off the bearded dagi bois. Merab couldn’t take down Yan… he’s not at that level. Had Aldo done what Coner did (move up to 155), he would have met Khabib and Islam and I am more than sure that he would have been put on his back more than once.

Rda had impeccable tdd at 155 but Khabib tossed him around. Whitaker was the perfect antiwressler until Chimaev sent him to school. Islam took down some guy named Arman… who’s kinda hard to take down. These bearded muslim mountain mfers have a different type of wresslin. People with more knowledge that you have claimed that, btw. I’m not talking out of my ass.

Aldo has excellent tdd, just like Whitaker. There are levels, though.

I mean, if someone like Merab fought someone like Jones and GSP, they would outwrestle Merab and put his ass down in the first place.

But even if they chose not to wrestle, I don't think Merab has ability to take those two down either. If they were the same size. And I don't think they would kinda give the fight away by being too gun shy either.

When it comes to Jones vs GSP, I think it's a coin toss in a way. I think Jones is slightly better than GSP. I always thought Jones was a better version of GSP. But he isn't clean so.

Roided up Super Hendricks was able to move GSP around like no one else....no one could do that to Jones, not even DC. I guess it depends if you count the clearly enhanced Hendricks as a regular opponent.

I give Aldo credit but TJ brought up a glaring hole in his cage defense. Apparently Aldi doesn't have great IQ in the clinch.

In the hours that Jones has been in the cage (going by just his 5-round fights, you've got 4-5 hours of cage time at the minimum, and it's probably closer to 10 hours overall), he's been controlled on the ground for 62 seconds - 12 by Gustafsson and 50 by Cormier. That's unreal.

The lower weight division guys have to be well rounded and good at everything.

Even today we still shuffle around 1 skill old farts at 205/265.

Between Mendes 1/2, Edgar 1/2, Lamas, Merab, and Faber who are the 5 best wrestlers he faced. In those 7 fights they went combined 4/68 on TDs

That's the difference between him and Jones, who else is mentioned, fighters actually tried to take Aldo down. Jones barely.

It was really the toughest match ups of their careers, and really only one guy came out on top. I hate to say it, but Jones is better than GSP.

Also, Cormier is likely the best opponent they faced between the two GSP and Jones, but pre-usada Hendricks, you know, that guy was a monster. I'm not necessarily sure that Hendricks was any less than DC though, especially at LHW. I think Cormier was better at HW.

It is pretty incredible that even an older battle worn Aldo could do that against a prime Merab....

Most people wouldn't even dare attempt to take Jones down because they knew it was futile. Other wresters tried though, including obviously DC....one of the best wrestlers in MMA history. Bader tried, Irish Jake O'Brien, I'm sure I'm forgetting some others.

Predicated on what? The roster depth at 205lbs is an embarrassment.

You can be a single skill old fart and be comfortably in the top 10.

Jones' most important wins are Gus and DC. His win over Gus was controversial and he had already failed his second PEDS test before the rematch with DC. Without cheating he might not even be the best fighter of his weight class, let along among the greats/P4P.
