If Charles beats Islam, is he the new LW Goat?

Conor starched a top 5 LW of all time to become champion. Barboza and Johnson were both in/around top 5. Al was a top 10'er.

Thanks for playing. Start watching MMA instead of reading about it

Conor is 3-4 at the weight with his last and only good win in 2016.

Al was a part time fighter and full time real estate agent and that's who Kabob beat for the title. Laughably bad.

No. Nobody fighting right now is a GOAT. Not Volk, not Izzy, not Islam, CERTAINLY not Charles, not Poirier...oops, forget JBJ, but he's the only one.

When you were using losses to discredit the quality of opponent - logic which we would have to equally apply to discredit Charles, right?

I'm not claiming Charles to be the division goat over Khabib, friend.

That's your strawman; not my argument.

Yeah because Ferguson bottled fighting Khabib.....not Khabib's fault Conor, Tony AND Max were all petrified to fight him.

Like I said.....start watching MMA. You'll sound like less of a noob.

Very close. His resume is already better than Khabib's. Add Islam to his resume, you can't dispute that. He defended his title two times (don't care about the 0.5 lbs lol). If he beats Islam and defends his title a few more times, it's Oliveira in my book. Now, Oliveira lost a bit. But that's because he fought everybody and was very young. 22-23 yr old kid fighting Jim Millers, Cerrones and Edgars of the world a bit too much, so I don't take it that seriously. Khabib wasn't fighting this kind of competition back then and people don't recognize most of his wins.
25yo Khabib was dominating the likes of prime RDA when Charles was getting tapped via strikes by Paul Felder

Oliveira might be in the discussion for greatest lightweight champion if he beats Islam and picks up a couple more title defenses, but he has way too many bad losses to be in the discussion for LW GOAT absent a whole lot more defenses than that.
right........., he's about on par with Khabib as it stands now. He's got more quality wins

Oh my misunderstanding! I took your anti-Khabib position as pro-Oliveira.

I may still disagree, but I clearly misspoke here. Sorry buddy!

So you're not denying Conor is a bum at the weight, or that Khabib beat Part Time Al who got the title shot by beating Diego?

Just making sure we are on the same page. Also, with that join date, I wouldn't be calling others noobs, friend.

Imagine defending Al Iaquinta as a title challenger lmao

Too many losses for Charles to be over Khabib, despite having a longer list of better wins. And like someone else said, Khabib took no damage in any of his fights whereas Charles took heavy damage in most of his good wins.

I dunno about GOAT. He lost too many times.
THE most exciting fighter in LW history, maybe yeah.
I believe it would be great for the division if Charles takes it back, many interesting matchups to follow

I concur.

Oliveira is arguably the most exciting fighter in any division.

Despite being a Olives fan since his 145 days, I have led a crusade against Charles in this and previous LW GOAT threads.

It's because the argument makes 0 sense to me, but this is absolutely spot on.

One thing I just want to add is that it's not just his finishing rate. It's the DIVERSITY of finishes.

Like, Francis Ngannou is super entertaining, obviously. Or Justin Gaethje. But there is usually only one thing you are expecting out of them. With Charles, you don't even really know what to expect because he can finish (or be finished) absolutely anywhere in the fight and it gives his fights a depth of interest that makes them even better than traditional finishers/exciting fighters, imo.

What's wrong with Diego? one of Penn's best title defenses

Concur and well said.

We fight fans, ultimately, want to see a finish. A decisive end, with no room for debate.

What you said is also spot on — it's not just that Oliveira guarantees "a finish" (win or lose), it's the excitement of how and who gets it that is always up in the air.

Oliveira's entire presence is dynamic; his style is dynamic: Forever coming forward, forever in motion, almost like "a mini-tornado" approaching his opponent.

Kicks, punches, knees, flying knees, elbows, Oliveira is literally a whirlwind of action ... and I, for one, consider him the most exciting fighter in MMA today.

Ironically, I'd probably give him the #1 p4p (current).
GOAT, I don't know, I'd rather wait for his career to end before thinking about this. Anyway, he's already one of the best champs the division ever had, the guy turned into a monster.

Beating Islam would be crazy (he'd earn a whole new nickname, Charles "Martel" Oliveira, it means both hammer and dick in old French, and there's the obvious reference, Charles Martel stopping the Islamic invasion at the battle of Tours/Poitiers), and we are mostly sure that if he wins, it's gonna be extremely spectacular. I, for one, really wanted that fight, one of the few rematch I really wanted to happen actually.

Oliveira has proved again, against Dariush, that he's still well above the other contenders, even if that level (Beneil, Justin, Dustin...) is fucking high.

Also, if Dariush won, he would certainly have had the TS too, so it's not totally unfair either.

Charles has a lot of tools he can use, which means that his next fight won't necessarily look like the first one. It isn't like, say, Strickland against Adesanya, where the fight is kinda predictable, and would probably look the same every time if they ran it 10 times, save from the exceptional fumble or critical hit.
I still think Islam is the favourite, but IMO Charles can do it. If you add my wishful thinking in the calculations, odds are close to 50%/50% actually :D:p

Meh he needs to beat Islam convincingly and defend at least 1 more time
