I think we're all just flabbergasted with Shavkat's performance now

Shavkat has looked good but never impressive against guys who are mostly over the hill.
Machado has fought pretty much the same level of competition but has always played it safer.

I wasn't surprised at all.

Not impressed with his IQ, I feel like he should have realized Gary was a lot stronger in the clinch after the first round and started shooting take downs way earlier.

I also remember guys like Khabib when he fought Barboza he would crowd him and give him no room to kick, Shavkat played at Gary's distance for way to long of stretches and was eating a lot of kicks as a result.

Hopefully he learns and makes adjustments its all part of becoming a champ.

Yeah his IQ seems like trash.

Also seems clonky and fumbly in scrambles. He's still good at them, maybe because of his strength I'm not sure.

I think it came down to control time and the initiation of the takedown, Garry outstruck Shav and stuff 8 of 10 takedowns plus came the closest to finishing the fight with that RNC attempt.

Shav looked to be in control more but I don’t necessarily think he was.

Of course when Shav was in mount he had a dominant position but Garry was being very active off his back so he wasn’t being smothered or mauled.

When you take the fight as a whole I agree with your analysis. And under PRIDE scoring Garry would have likely taken the decision.

However, with the scoring system we have now, Shavkat won. He edged out 3 of the 5 rounds.

Shavkat won more minutes, Garry had the bigger moments and was overall more impressive throughout the fight.

Neither of those guys looked very impressive. But I've never been that high on Ian in the first place, he constantly fights very safe, and I think that's part of what made Shavkat seem unimpressive in this fight. It's hard to get stuff done when your opponent is super defensive and not opening up much.

He did nothing to Ian other than hug him on the cage... lol shavkat was boring and Ian was not the reason.

Whitebelt comment for sure. Burns is a LW washout that found his way to the WW title because WW mostly sucks now. Khamzat gassed hard in that fight against Burns, and his defensive striking is suspect. He's easy to hit when he's tired and he gets tired easily. If he doesn't have immediate success he fades quickly. I doubt he survives 5 rounds.

You just refuse to give Garry his due as a legitimate contender himself. I think he gives Khamzat the same problems, maybe out lasts him since his conditioning is clearly better.

you're just ignoring that khamzat couldn't wrestle burns at all because of his BJJ and was forced to strike, garry was getting taken down by shavkat who's takedowns are significantly less impressive and slower than chimaev. Robert whittaker who has some of the best takedown defense even said after the fight that he doesn't know how anyone can stop khamzat's takedown. No offense but if you think garry gives khamzat problems as a skinny lanklet point fighter with pillowfists then I think you're crazy.

What we actually saw is Shavkat casually beating Garry for 22 of 25 minutes. He got in a really bad position by getting over zealous after so easily bullying Garry, then worked his way out. Garry isn't a talented enough grappler to close the show with such a compromising position, and Shavkat is tough and experienced enough to reverse position.

Garry is a point fighter and Shavkat had a clear monotonous win. The point fighter got out pointed, enjoy the justice, ask MVP how it feels.

Shavkat and Garry have showed they have better cardio and can make weight consistently vs Khamzat despite being huge 170lb’ers.

How is Shavkat shit for having his first decision in 19 fights against a guy who is likely vastly underrated by haters.

If Khamzat fails to get the takedown and finish the fight there he’s gassing and getting priced up by either.

I mean he got hit like 150 times by the same predictable punch from the hip against a gassed guy with his arms down and like a 68 inch reach when he couldn’t secure a takedown. Same thing against off the couch Usman.

I wouldn't turn on him for having a badass fight with a stylistic nightmare, I'm turning on shavkat because Ian garry is not a stylistic nightmare, he is a pillowfisted point fighter who is pretty skinny for the division yet shavkat could barely take him down and almost got choked out by him. I still think he's a good fighter and the second best welterweight behind Belal currently though
