I just watched Star Wars for the first time.

I watched the Star Wars series growing up. I thought it was ok, but it wasn't something that I geeked out over or transformed my life over. People go nuts for these movies and I'm not sure why.

Completely agree, although the space battle scenes in jedi are probably one of my favorite sci fi action sequences ever, and that music track one of the best build-ups of all time.

To those saying skip 1, no no no.

The movie just starts when Liam Neeson Jin and Obi Ewan McGregor run into an evil looking Jedi with a black robe, who lowers his hood and breaks out a duel sided lightsaber.

Good movie, although a bit short.

I guess I'm one of the very few that loved Ep3, and fulfilled about every reasonable expectation after the dissapointments of Ep1 and Ep2.

Machete order, problem solved. You can comlpletely skip Ep. 1 and not really miss any important plot points.

IV, V, II, III, VI

Luke's Journey, flash back to Anakin's, then the finale (until the new ones come out). Ep. I can be watched later as sort of an 'origin' story, or not at all.
 
I honestly don't see where the hate for The Phantom Menace comes from. Is it just Jar Jar Binks? I can safely ignore him and focus on cool stuff such as the pod race and Darth Maul. It's not a great movie but then again neither was Return of the Jedi.

That's interesting.

A lot of people who saw 4-6 when they were young feel that way.
Sometimes it's questioned whether the newer 3 are that much worse or if it's just being older and having higher expectations for films.

But you feel the same, watching it now for the first time.
 
Return of the Jedi was "ok?" Are you for real? Kids today. Luke Skywalker in Return of the Jedi is a fucking badass, end of story.

because the whole movie and 2 and 3 suck ass and are no good at all. but phantom menace does have a lot of great old racism in it.
The chinese merchants, the blue jewish slave owner with a gonzo nose, the jamaican dumbass who can't speak american. how typical---stereotypical

The best part of that film was the struggle between Luke, Darth Vader and the Emperor. It is a very unique and original confrontation atypical of a lot stories.

Luke goes to them knowing he has no chance in a fight with them and is essentially rendering himself useless to the ongoing battle on the planet and against the Death Star. What epic hero in a storyline leaves like that and watches from the sidelines with a trust in his friends' success?

All this for a more personal, yet very crucial matter in attempting an offer of redemption to his father?

I even appreciated the small things like the not so subtle allusion when Han says he feels like he won't see the Millenium Falcon again, leading audiences to believe that either he or Lando were going to perish in battle only for both of them to come out essentially unscathed.

What brought the movie down in my eyes were the Ewoks. They could've been done better. C3p0 and r2d2 were enough comedic relief. The Ewoks were too campy with exaggerated racial stereotyping of "primitive" people. I couldn't take their battle with the storm troopers in the least bit seriously. I know I probably wasn't supposed to but I at least would have liked to have been able to a little. It did tug at my heart a little when that Ewok was mourning his friend's death mid-battle.

I took it as a small blunder in an otherwise great series... until I started episode 1 and the campiness and stereotypes became even more exaggerated.

Episode 1 feels like hanging out with an annoying friend who is trying too hard to be funny.

Love Episode 3 as well and I even put it on 3rd place as far as my favorites from the 6 movies (Im not going to say which of the original trilogy in in 4th just to not create more controversy which is not the intention of this post)

TS you should just sit for episode one and take it like a man, if only because you will get to complete the whole story and because then you can see episodes 2 and 3 and you will see the ending of episode 3 which in my opinion the last 3 seconds of episode 3 is one of the most beautiful endings in movie history (full of hope, full of awe, finally all questions are answered, beautiful)

I felt the same as well, even though I wasn't around when the OT came out.

I watched them in the order in which they were numbered, and I had very little knowledge about Star Wars, other than the fact that Vader was Luke's dad, and that Leia is Luke's sister. Didn't know the prequels were hated so much.

Was very disappointed when I started ep. 1. Didn't really get what the hype around Star Wars was about and stopped watching. Then I read some more about it, and learned that the prequels were far inferior. So I continued and when I reached the OT, I was pleasantly surprised. Really enjoyed those movies, but generally dislike the prequels. Episode 3 is somewhat decent though.

So it's not only nostalgia that makes people hate the prequels IMO. Though I can imagine the hatred is amplified.

Yea I've noticed this to. You can completely skip 1 and not miss much.
