HW OFFICIAL Actor Battle "Fight 4"

Weird.

This is why I consider DDL the very worst of actors. He's been in one film his entire life, it's just got nine volumes and they're all called DANIEL DAY-LEWIS ACTS (AGAIN). I wish I enjoyed him more, but his overshadowing of everything else around him ruins the film. DeNiro knows he's in a film, DDL takes it on like life and loses both accessibility and entertainment. His films feel like lessons without meaning. Exercises. Hollow showcases.

I remember you said this before and I asked if you thought that about My Left Foot, The Boxer and In The Name of The Father. I can't remember what you said but I got the impression you felt he was the same "howling and snarling" guy in his two biggest films, GONY and TWBB. After I saw Lincoln I thought, "surely Three Gun will have to eat his words". I just don't know what you're seeing.

The "howling and snarling" isn't always literal, but also emblematic of his all consuming approach to film participation. In other words I think he railroads everything else off the screen. Many people look at this singular element and are rightfully blown away by his staggering ability, but to me he creates too much imbalance because I prefer films as a whole rather than a collection of parts. I would rather him onstage.

Can kinda see what you're saying but I don't fault DDL for being better than nearly anyone he's on screen with.

Especially in something like TWBB where he's the focal point of the movie

Did you find that in The Boxer or In The Name of The Father? Or even Lincoln? I'm just wondering about specific films because I feel like I know what you mean regarding TWBB and GONY, but don't get it if you're extending it to his other performances.

Gotta go with Bobby and it's literally by a hair. No more no less. Good one mate.

After our discussion, I tried watching THE BOXER and found it really dull. Quit it pretty quickly. FATHER I saw long ago, and again remember being bored. LINCOLN I will see in the next few years, I guess. There is simply nothing that intrigues me about it. And yes, I did find him to be inaccessible in those roles.

I liked MOHICANS. I did not like GANGS or BLOOD, but I liked him in them. I agree being the best actor onscreen shouldn't be his fault, but at the same time no one's being faulted, except maybe my inability to be impressed. That's fair.

All in all I do enjoy your points of view on him.

The only DDL movie I really liked quite a bit was Gangs of New York.... other than that his movies are quite boring... I couldnt make it thru the first hour of Lincoln it was just... boring IDK

Well since you listed HEAT first under De Niro's performances I'll have to go with Neil on this one.

The movies are in no order... I just plae top 5 performances with no basis for whats best... I like to let the viewers decide that for themselves

I don't understand the huge mancrush a lot of Mayberrians have on DDL. He's okay, Gangs of New York is the only performance that sticks out.

Bandwagon. DDL has no "bad films" to lessen him. Who doesn't love a winner? It's easy!

Daniel Day Lewis for me by a landslide. Also a crime to not to have Last of the Mohicans in here.

He's like the Kobe Bryant of film. Damn ballhogs will not seduce me! (no homo)

RDN has become a caricture of himself lately like Pacino but I don't see how that takes away from his other roles

Taxi Driver
Goodfellas
Casino
Heat
Deerhunter
Cape Fear
Godfather part 2
Raging Bull

And I'll add Meet the Parents and Analyze that to show his comedic side.

I actually didn't like A Bronx Tale because I couldn't by Chaz Palmaterri bitching up Bobby D.

I believe originally there roles were switched but Chaz wrote the movie and refused to do it without swapping parts

I heard it was DeNiro thought he should be the father because everyone would expect him as the heavy and maybe that would unbalance the focus away from the kid.

Well De Niro is battering the champ... Wonder if he will make a resurgence

Which are all (in the most part) really similar roles, played in a similar way.
