Opinion How can we truly end Mexico's cartels and drug wars?

It can't be stopped, and won't be stopped.

The absence of drugs to the US economy would be devastating.

There is so many pathways that guide people to use drugs, from mental health issues, pain relief and recreational fun, and until those issues are no longer being dealt with or no longer desired, there will always be a market for those drugs.

drug use has been increasing in the western world - aint no one stopping using drugs, just like people aint stopping drinking

the only answer is legalization - there are countries that pulled it of successfully, copy their model

US states have legalized weed and immediately mexican cartels felt the lose in income having to compete with US growers (who had better quality goods)

war on drugs is a failure since its been going on for 4 decades now without ANY results (other than making cartels, CIA and everyone else dealing with black market richer)
Legalize drugs, and the cartels will simply find other means of making money. They’re already huge on extortion, fuel theft, synthetic drugs...

What do you supposed will happen if drugs are legalized!? More extortion, more fuel theft, etc.

we should break the cartels by buying up all their drugs

they make huge amounts of money on drugs - they are easy to grow and distribute
other means of making money arent as lucrative and as easy

how are mexican cartels going to extort anyone in the US? or steal fuel? who cares about that, those are local issues which mexicans will have to deal with
as it stands currently, mexican cartels dealing drugs is a US problem as well

You’re absolutely right, those issues will be Mexico’s problems...for the most part.

I can see an uptick in kidnapping of U.S. citizens, if their drug business collapses. Remember, those bad hombres have people on BOTH sides of the border, and coordinating a kidnapping like that wouldn’t be all that difficult for them.

It can’t be stopped when certain parts of the US government has a stake in it all.

Not sure that's true. If able too they are going to involve themselves in more extortion, more fuel theft, etc if it's profitable. They aren't going to not make extra money because drugs are legal or illegal.

Give the cartels the same protections as big pharma?

just kidding in case anyone thought I was serious. To compare the two is ridiculous.

they couldnt make billions kidnapping people like they do now from drugs - not to mention how much harder that process would be on US soil
legalizing drugs would severely cut cartels financing which would in turn most likely trigger inner conflicts within cartels for whats left of the profits - most of them would die out in the process by not being able to finance themselves anymore in volume that they are now

everything else was already tried to combat these cartels - the only thing that put a dent in them was legalizing weed, forcing them to focus on other drugs instead
if we legalized everything, they'd be properly fucked

just treat people like adults and legalize drugs - those who want to use hard drugs (heroin, meth, etc), use part of taxes from drugs to finance clinics that would help these addicts and wean them off the harder stuff (anyone who buys these drugs is automatically listed in the system and should report to these clinics)
if I am not mistaken Portugal has this system in place and it was a huge success, reducing the number of addicts by a noticeable number

also people wont be so hard pressed to use harder drugs if there is weed (and alcohol) on every step + they are getting the attention they need from professionals in clinics

Decriminalize it.

I am for legalization of Cocaine too, just set age limit to 23 .
In Brazil it's not legalized but what happened is that so called militias(in fact, they're mafias) have taken over many favelas(Ghettos). They kill anybody doing or selling drugs or stealing but they extort people for protection and sell abusive basic services like cooking gas and pirate cable tv. The same would happen in Mexico.
The only way is the Sri Lanka way. For decades Sri Lanka tried to fight the Tamil Tigers without success, they made deals, they called for the UN, they tried to educate the people. It didn't work, a massive artillery barrage followed by infantry did the job.
Cartels members need to be killed like ISIS terrorists. Police needs to be increased and be placed everywhere. Corrupt officers should be executed.

Legalization of drugs in America. Strong immigration reform to allow an influx of workers when we need them. Strong penalties for companies that hire illegally. A registration program that is quick, easy, and free for those that already here illegally.

Kill them all.

Yahh generally they aren't that dumb. Last thing they want is hard US involvement. They already got their ass gaped once. US military being given a kill order is the only thing they have to fear.

It's the fault of the US. We need to stop having laws and borders.

Without goint the Mao or Stalin/Putin route. Which is for the government to infilitrate and kill everyone.

Is it to become a mafia state? The government agents empower 1 cartel to take out the others. And then infilitrate that cartel and take it out and then any oligarchs left become agents of the state to do the governments bidding
Stop buying illegal drugs. America is their best customer, and people die daily so that Americans can use those drugs.

You basically repeated what I said.

The U.S. would need to completely decriminalize drugs across the board and switch to a more treatment oriented society as opposed to a punitive one.

legalize drugs, duh...

how is this even a question at this point?

No, I realize our society is filled with low cognition drones, produced by our educational system, that don't weigh the consequences.
do you realize that drug use is as old as human history?

telling people to stop buying drugs is fucking retarded. you might as well tell people to stop believing in god.
