Crime Headlining Crime Megathread Vol. 2

Cops shoot first and figure out mental issues later.

Why do you say stupid shit like this? There were 990 police shootings in 990, 80% of them involved armed suspects, so ~200 shootings of unarmed suspects. There are 53 million police encounters per year. Your stereotype just didn't play out. The fraction of times police have to shoot an unarmed or even armed suspect is vanishingly small.

I'm guessing this was supposed to be a "See, BLM are retards and police need to do this kind of work, not social workers" thread?

You guys are choosing to shut your brains off when it comes to this topic. People are asking to reimagine how we do what we do. That doesn't mean that you just send in 53 year old grandmothers to handle dangerous mentally ill people.
The options to deal with these situations are not limited to untrained cops with guns out, or frail women and soy boys.
We have the ability to create new jobs, new training, and new systems.

Dont want to be THAT guy, but we told them so. WTF did they expect was going to happen?

RIP to the lady

Well, you are THAT guy. Read the article, and read the thread. This was a normal social worker, doing normal social work, just like thousands of other social workers around the country.

If you guys can't be bothered to read a very short article, or at least a few of the posts in the thread you're posting in, how much faith should we really have in your ability to speak on anything we discuss on this forum?

I think you’re intentionally misrepresentating the nature of the crime. Where does it say she answered a call in the article? The article says:

Benson worked as a case manager and visited the Scargo-Lewiston apartment building, which houses people who were formerly homeless.

It also says she was known by the people in the building had visited the building before. This doesn’t seem as though she was responding to a call.

Correct. Not answering a call, just a regular check up.

Which begs the question of how much more dangerous it is when checking on a person that's already acting irrational before social workers get there.

Depends on if the person is known to the social worker or not. If the social worker knows the person then they may be confident they could calm them down whereas police may agitate the situation.

Should be on a case by case basis imo.

Since this thread is depressing as hell, mainly due to the morons spitting on the memory of a social worker because they can't bother themselves to read a one-page article, I'll share a nice story.

A friend of mine was married recently, and his wife is a social worker in Baltimore City. One of the speakers at their wedding was a young guy, around 20 years old, who has been on her case load for 5-6 years or so. He spoke about where his home life was when she entered the picture, and how she changed his entire perspective on life. He said he considers her to be like an older sister, somebody who cared for him and treated him like family when his life was very difficult. She also provided some guidance on how to pursue something more positive in his life, which led to him graduating high school and enrolling in college. He's now getting ready to graduate from college with a degree in something computer related.

That's what social workers do. They visit families, they provide resources, they offer counseling, and they help people. There are thousands and thousands of stories like that.

I posted based on the OP and then read the article.

Yes it was normal social work - now amp it up to answering a call on a person with a knife that has mental health issues and is in the midst of a psychotic episode.

If you people need us to finish connecting the dots before we discuss anything I would have to question your ability to speak on anything

Which is why I don't want them put at risk for the stuff they are being set up for it they replace cops and yes I know this story isn't that. Those stories are coming though

Damn. Reminds me of the movie Patch Adams where his girlfriend does a house call for a crazy dude and gets murdered.

That's awful. The whole "defund the police" shit is next level retardation, but this woman had nothing to do with that and was just trying to help someone as I'm sure she had done before.

You mean like how this lady knew the mental patient so it's ok for her to answer a call in the scenario I described?

Yeah, pretty much. Unfortunately occasionally in a job like that there will be a tragic event. I would say leave it up to the social worker to decide whether they feel safe answering the call or whether they would rather leave it to the police.

Well, you are THAT guy, if by that guy you mean "didn't read the article but it fits into my narrative so my commentary will reflect this ignorance."

Dont be dense. It isnt much of a stretch to go from visiting her normal clients to answering a call about an active psychotic episode.

But "defund the police" advocates have already decided that it shouldn't be left to police.

I'm not even convinced police are always the best choice, but DTP are basically advocating that the occasional tragedies happen to social workers instead of the mental patient.
