I came home early from work this afternoon to discover that someone broke into my home. I think they might have been alerted when I pulled up. They only got away with a TV, Xbox and blueray player. They totally missed all the jewerly, money, tablet and laptop I had in easy sight.

I thought they were still inside my home when I entered because the lights in one of the rooms was left on. Grabbed a steak knife from the kitchen and was ready to carve me up some people jerky. It turns out the thieves had already left so I got to thinking...

Its a good thing they still werent inside. There might have been multiple badguys. I might be able to take down one person but not two. They probably had knifes, a crowbar and who knows what else.

Thinking I may need a weapon for home defense and something to carry around in my car. May get a shotgun but not sure on which type of handgun. The Judge seems pretty good ... Think I want to stick with a revolver of some sort. Maybe a 22. >_> Any suggestions?

Pretty clueless about guns. I only ever fired an airgun.

it's probably not the best idea to purchase a firearm until you do more research on the subject. owning a gun probably isn't going to prevent you from being burgled though.

Just get something small like this

owning a gun wont prevent your house from being robbed if you arent home

but if you are serious about getting one...do all your research first, dont be hasty to jump right into it

this is how 55% crime fighters begin their career
oh wait wrong thread

If you need a home defense weapon then do NOT get a .22, get a .45

Dont buy a gun unless youre gona go to a range and get good at shooting. Learn basic gun safety and how to take it apart. If you get a shotgun, that would have been in your house for the burglars to pick up and point at you so make sure you dont leave it laying around in plain view loaded or with shells next to it. A little. 38 special with internal hammer is easy to carry/conceal and easy for a beginner to shoot. No racking a slide or cocking the hammer back or worrying about a safety on or off. Just pull the trigger.

hi-point 9mm runs about 170 bucks...look into that....if you are serious of course

I do plan on firing a few shots off at the gun range and taking some gun classes before I rush out and buy a boomstick. Just want to get something good when I do.

Nothing wrong with getting a gun, and it'll be great if you are home when someone breaks in. If you do get one, make sure you keep it locked up though. The last thing you want is to have your gun stolen too if you aren't home.

Get a better job and move to a better part of town.

You're getting a gun for all the wrong reasons at this point, and setting yourself up for litigation. Carry permits are mainly for people who want to protect their lives, not their possessions.

Knowingly putting yourself into a situation, such as running around your house that was obviously burgled looking for crooks with a gun is a recipe for disaster. And should you have to shoot, you better have ironclad proof your life or your loved one's was in imminent danger of ending.

So unless you are serious and absolutely sure you want that responsibility, then by all means go forward. If not. Chalk it up as a loss, and invest in better home security.

How did they get in?

An alarm system or dog sounds like a better solution to your problem.

You can still get a gun of course but its not going to stop your crib from getting broken into. What happens if your car is stolen?

get some practice with guns first....then decide if you still want one

Yeah. Don't get a gun right away. Think about things first. And if you do get a gun, don't listen to all the crap advice of immediately jumping to some massive caliber.

9mm is the farthest id advise any new gun owner to go and even thats iffy
