"Give an A+ athlete 6 months"

soccer player, tennis player, basketball can have a similar physique. they would still never get good at the other sports. it takes much longer to learn other sports than learning fighting.

if you dont start playing tennis or soccer at like 6 years old you'll never be world class.

Absolutely untrue. Messi is 5'7 and weighs around 150. Lebron is 6'8 and 250.

What this argument often misses is that fighting professionally is not just about being physically capable, and having the skills to do so. There's also a mentality to it. There is nothing easy about getting punched in the face. It's not fun to get kicked in the liver. It takes a different kind of mentality to deal with the grind of being an MMA fighter and stick with it. A lot of people have tried because they like the science of fighting, and stepped away early on and decided the punishment you put yourself through isn't worth it.

Can you read? Your response has absolutely nothing to do with the post that you quoted and sure as shit isn't any kind of rebuttal...... Hell, your comment isn't even on par with itself....

Not only that but being a world class athlete doesn't mean that a person is capable of transitioning into different sports. The movements related to basketball, football, and baseball are all extremely different from one another and those transitions are very rare. Michael Jordan was an amazing athlete and possibly the greatest basketball player to ever live.....but was a terrible baseball player.

Lol I've been seeing this forever now. Are people trolling when they say this or do they really believe it.

What the fuck can you learn in 6 months that'll teach you how to beat a guy who has been doing this for years? Fighting is the one sport where having a super high vertical, a blazing 40, and crazy explosion doesn't 100% dictate a fight.

I was a former college wrestler and trust me. It's going to take longer than 6 months to learn takedowns, it's not just a single leg/double leg...and it's not just "hurr durr sprawl when they shoot"...hearing this really dawns to me how little a lot of you know about the intricate nature of grappling/striking.

6 months may teach you some basic stuff, but when you're getting hooks thrown in and your back taken...human nature takes over and people do things that they shouldn't do. It takes years of training to break the habit of these quirks.

Kevin Randleman was an A+ athlete and one of the best college wrestlers in his era not to mention the potential "supps" he may have taken in his hey day. And his record is nothing spectacular (RIP). That should show you that this sport has evolved much further from the time where a super athlete could come in and dominate.

Oh and don't mention Brock Lesnar as an example, considering he was the #1 Heavyweight wrestler at Minnesota in his NCAA days

I believe that if you take an A+ Striker and teach him basic survival skills on the ground, and drill the everloving fuck out of TDD you can potentially (depending on matchups) get them into the top 5, at HW. But any of the other divisions, good luck.

you weren't an a or b level athlete with the near certainty of rising to the top of the c level athletes in mma. you're just another d level with a small chance at rising to the top. conor doesn't make a tad more than you.

1. You don't have a fucking clue as to my athletic level.
2. You HAVE given EVERYONE here an incite into academic level.
3. Conor is neither a LHW (205) or HW (206+) male athlete. This I stated in my post!
4. You are just "silly" with any "certainty of rising to the top in MMA" talk. Suggesting this, you need to realize it works against your argument.
5. You don't know what I earn.
6. Again stress the 205 pound and above male A level athlete thing here. Why does the UFC HW champion do MMA as a part time job to supplement his full time job of a firefighter's salary?

Damn man!

Go watch A+ level Johnnie Morton stand in the pocket and get murked in his one and only fight..

have you seen the pay?

I agree with OP. We have had so many A+ athletes with a lifetime of combat training under their belt who couldn't rise to the top of MMA. Some fans are just literally idiots.

1 - i know you're not a or b level. you said it yourself. you're a wrestler. by definition not top level. so yes, i know. this is your argument remember?
2. what?
3. again, i'm using conor as example of earning potential in mma. it's very high, fyi.
4. again, this is YOUR argument. you're argument is they will dominate. how does this work against my argument?
5. i know you don't earn close to what conor earns.
6. stipe is not working to supplement his income because he doesn't make enough as hw champ. again, stress that there are plenty of failed top collegiate athletes too small for their positions at the next level. big enough to fight at 205 or hw. why don't they choose to own the world of mma? make that ppv chedda.

He had a full ride to Iowa State after becoming the national JUCO champ, he chose to go into mma to make money because his girl was pregnant.

Wrong again. He transferred to Morrisville State after he won the national JUCO championship, that's a Division 3 school.

I'm telling you he had a full D1 ride. You think a JUCO national champ is going to go to a D3 school where there is no scholarship money? Cormier even said that OK State was trying to get Jones. He quit because his girl got pregnant and had to make money, he's talked about it several times.

Jon Jones is one of the few truly elite athletes in the sport.

He has two brothers and as though setup by destiny to highlight this point - both of them are in the NFL. Now they are both very good players, but they are not considered the best. That is because the NFL is populated with elite athletes.

We have one in MMA, and he's not considered good. He's literally the greatest of all time.

Stipe Miocic is a failed college baseball player and he's considered one of the best athletes at HW. I really don't think it would take much for a monster like JJ Watt or Von Miller to come over and clean up.

It is just common sense.

Think of guys like Mitrione and Schaub - you can compete, with success at the absolutely highest level of MMA even though you are on your second or third athletic career at 30+ years old.

That is just simply not possible in other sports.

That's the beauty of the sport, if I train for six months I'll beat them all in the first.

There's probably a few naturals in nfl or nba but for the most part you would be surprised how a lot of big names folded fast for knows what reason. Fighting is a different level of competition even if mma hasn't captured the best athletes. Boxing has some great athletes but not like it use to.

But he DID go to a D3 school where there is no scholarship money. It's a fact that Jon Jones transferred to Morrisville State before he dropped out of college. He never once attended Iowa State, he attended Iowa State Community College.
