Gaethje pokes Paddy in the eye once and gets warned by the ref to close his fingers. He then pokes Paddy again, knocks him down with a haymaker and follows up with like 50 unanswered punches. By this point Paddy was obviously concussed and fighting on instincts just to survive and he never fully recovered.
No point taken. No time given to Paddy to recover. Insane bad luck for Paddy in a title fight. What can be done to handle these kind of situations better? Or is this just a part of the sport thing?smh.
I think if there is an eye poke after a warning then there should be a point taken and the fighter who was poked should be given 5 minutes to recover and if the ref didn’t see it live he should be able to see the replay to determine.
That sequence shaped the fight and I think Gaethje is well past his prime. He was gassed by round 3 and putting his head down and swinging wild just like he was before Oliveira finished him. Unfortunately for Paddy, by the time Gaethje had slowed down Paddy's brains were already beat into mush and he couldn't capitalize.
I think Ilia or Arman would have finished the Gaethje that we saw last night and I might sound crazy but I think Padddy would have beaten Gaethje last night if not for those eye pokes and if not then at least the fight would have been significantly more competitive.
Too bad for Paddy who showed tremendous heart.
