Media Future Champ Michael Morales Working On His Grappling

His grappling base makes him a big problem. I believe his mother was a judoka as well.

He has been doing judo since he was in diapers.

Honestly it says something that people now think of him as a striker.

I grappled with so many Judo black Belts that "had been doing it since diapers" and ironically enough, I came from a Sambo gym. One of my main teammates was a Judo black belt and we'd cross train with really good kodokan with their black belt team, just doing open mats mostly...hard rounds, always started standing, really there to get our upper body wrestling better and have consistent strong rounds vs people who had good bases, takedown defense and offense etc. Sometimes we'd even just wrestling rounds instead of rolling...a great resource, surprising how many gyms don't do stuff like this or dont feel its a priority.

That said? I would dump most of the black Belts on their heads. It was shocking how much easier they were to take down than other Sambo guys or wrestlers. How much more reliant on the gi they are and how prone to giving up their backs and weak to body locks etc. Morales is a freak athlete but he should not rely on his "Judo" or "wrestling" backgrounds from Ecuador, he should be bringing in guys like Yaroslav Amosov to train with him or taking trips to train with guys like that, go to Sean Bradys gym, work with Brady and they have some guys from Georgia and Tajikistan who are good and 170lbers like Samandar Murodov...just get in as many rounds as possible vs guys like that...hes gotta be full "i wanna smash Islam" mode. Hes young, he has very little experience compared to Islam, hes gotta take that seriously.

I do not see this guy beating Islam, nothing to do with this video...but he gasses pretty easily and looks slow overall. I think Islam makes easier work of him tbh.
Yup..not to mention all the high level experience Islam has, plus his high fight IQ. People really often underestimate how much fight IQ and experience matters. Especially when the person you're fighting has less of it than you.

Have we seen him tested in the grappling?

Brady never even got close to a takedown.

He has been wrestling for 16 years since age ten, in addition to judo since age 4 and his mother was a competitor and instructor.

If anything his grappling and particularly his grappling endurance is undefined at this point until we see him faced with a test we won't really know. Can he fight a grueling grappling heavy battle for 3-5 rounds? Can he sustain pace?
