Law French Researcher Expelled From US Over Criticism Of Trump Policy

Lol, you don't even know what was on his phone, the feds had to look into it after all.

You don't trust your institutions now?

Institutions and checks n balances are all useless if they got their balls completely cupped by the executive branch. Sure, places like Pakistan have PMs and “courts” but most of those positions are crystallized based on if the candidates have the approval of generals.

It’s a hot bed for corruption n what not. These changes don’t happen over night but they are surely deliberate. This current admin is definitely heading there. It’s too bad that Trump Supporters felt self conscious for not understanding the seriousness of democracy and checks+balances.

What the hell were they doing going through the content of his phone and laptop? Doesnt that require a warrant? Or can TSA now just grab your phone and go through your private stuff?

Here in australia. We'll just take the phone. Go download the entire contents and hand it back to ya. Its quite humerpus how many people have been caught with fucked up shit.

Under the Customs Act 1901 (Cth), ABF officers have the power to examine and copy documents which include the contents of mobile phones.

Counts for laptops and everything as well.

Don't you see how randomly searching phones upon entry and using that as a basis for expulsion might be an overreach? Surely we want visa holders to feel secure in this country and not vulnerable to arbitrary expulsion right?

What kind of content do you think would constitute terrorism here?

I have no problem with complete random searches for people entering on visas. It done all the time on many countries.

?? Thats literally what our border patrol does. Generally when something is flagged or suspicious itho.

This article is odd. What was on his phone. And who was the guy.

Odds are his name flagged on the system and im curious as to why.

Im guessing somebody doesnt have the cleanest posting history online lol
You think people should be expelled for posting history?

This is one of those stories where I feel like the truth is a lot different from the media portrayal.

I doubt they'd go through all the trouble over some dude saying "Trump sucks".
No I refuse this balanced assumption and am going to go with Nazism because that s the going word for anything right of middle these days.

If it’s just “orange man bad”, then its a ridiculous abuse of power.

If it’s actual threats, then it’s a different story.

I agree. However, it begs the question, if the French researcher was a serious threat or if he had done anything seriously illegal, why would they just send him home?

Logically, the most likely scenario is that he was not a serious threat and had not done anything seriously illegal. The most likely scenario is that he was just some type of critic of Trump. Perhaps it was strong criticism, but expulsion for even strong criticism would be a ridiculous abuse of power.

I think it’s a valid question since TSA doesn’t work for Trump and they said the material constituted terrorism.

If it’s just “orange man bad”, then its a ridiculous abuse of power.

If it’s actual threats, then it’s a different story.
Then they should detain him for questioning, just expelling him without intel is silly.

We dont know what he was expelled for? / denied entry.

No? I dont.

But im partial to denying holocaust deniers etc and certain idealogies. So i guess i could be talked into it lol but no history is history.

Personally i wouldnt be shocked being denied into any nation in the world if im openly shitting on your goverment heh. We have all become very priveledged lol

You say this as if Trump isn’t petty enough to sue pollsters that don’t have him winning…

I wouldn't put it past him, but in all likelihood, Trump has probably never heard of this guy. He's a nobody. The authorities went after him on their own.

If I had to guess, there was probably some sort of agreement under the table that they'd not pursue the case any further as long as he left the United States.

They have been able to for some time as far as I'm aware.

This again, falls under the governments ability to deny entrance to ANY valid visa holders if they feel a person has violated or lied on their application. I don't know what was on his phone and I would hope that it wasn't done out of spite because he happens to not like Trump. Tough to say without knowing what was on the phone.

I have no idea what kind of content. That’s why I wanted to know.

I think TSA searching phones is absolutely an overreach.

Totally agree. Which is why I want more information.

What if it is a doctor and has confidential patient files on his laptop? This just seems too much...
