Forrest Gump sucked

It was never definite in the movie or the script, but Forest Gump was based off a novel by the same name. The novel has a sequel, "Gump and Co." , and in the novel it states that Jenny died from Hep C. This makes more sense to me...AIDS was pretty well identified by 1982 (when Jenny died), and the virus causing Hep C wasn't isolated until the late 1980's...seems like Hep C is the winner.

"Although many people assumed it was AIDs, the actual disease was not mentioned in the movie. She certainly doesn’t look like an AIDs sufferer as she is dying, however—no wasting, lesions, etc. In the book that’s the sequel to Forrest Gump, Gump and Co., author Winston Groom reveals that Jenny died of hepatitis C, a bloodborne illness which would probably have been the result of her intravenous drug use during her hippie years. There’s a very low rate of transmission through intercourse or from mother-to-child, which is why neither Forrest nor their son was infected."

1) AIDS was not "pretty well identified" in '82; it only got named AIDS in '82.
2) He wrote Gump & Co in '94/'95, when Forrest Gump was in production. It was GRIDS/AIDS, and he changed it in the sequel to pander to the politics of the time.
3) Forrest Gump was released in '86; no one outside of medical labs and Michael Chrichton were thinking about hep C at the time.
4) Jenny got the bug during the height of GRIDS/AIDS days, not the height of Hep C.
5) Jenny not having the skin shit was politically cosmetic for the movie; can't offend specific folks by stating that debauch and deviancy cause disease, especially not after he just did Philadelphia. 90% of the studio's costume department would revolt.

GRIDS/AIDS is the the easy winner if you don't live in retcon universe.

O Bubba no.. I cried to this shit

yeah it’s not good. rose-tinted boomer suckfest

The AIDS thing always bothered me...she never clearly said what her disease was, but only that it was something that was kind of new in the 80's. Problem with her having AIDS is that Forest boned her without protection...if it was AIDS there's a pretty good chance that Forest would have gotten AIDS, and also wouldn't Jenny's kid have likely been born with AIDS?

I've actually argued this with people before, but since both Forest and the kid are healthy I think it's more likely that she had some form of aggressive cancer rather than AIDS.

Well, we never knew if the kid had AIDS or not. We just Jew he wasn’t a retard as implied when Jenny said “he’s normal.”

But Forrest always was lucky. That’s how we explain him not getting AIDS.

You're coming off as silly and argumentative about a "fan theory."

In the first book did they every CLEARLY say GRIDS / AIDS? Also, do you have any sources by the author stating what you're suggesting, ie that it was originally AIDS but he changed it to Hep C?

Point 5 : sounds like you're the one ret-conning things to try and prove your point of view / opinion / fan theory.

Either way I always just felt like it wouldn't have been AIDS because that would mean that both Forest and his boy were exposed to the virus (though not necessarily meaning that they contracted the virus). Forest Gump was a happy-go-lucky movie so I have a hard time believing that both Forest and his son being exposed to AIDS fits within that framework.

Forest sure was a lucky SOB, so fair enough on that point. Back in the early 80's there was basically no treatment for HIV/AIDS so if the kid had contracted AIDS he likely wouldn't have made it to 8 or 9 years old (or however old he was at the end of the film).

Again, this was just my thoughts on the film as a whole. Either way great movie and I really enjoyed it when it came out...that being said I haven't watched it in probably 15 years, so I can't really say how well it holds up. On a flip side the Lt. Dan Band with Gary Sinese performed on Camp Lejeune just across the street from my old barracks. Great show, great guy, and it's cool how he has kind of "become" his character from the movie.

Holy shit. I had no idea there was a Lt. DanBand. I know about The Dan Band though.

Both bands are awesome, though I haven't heard much from The Dan Band in years...I have their first release which is pretty much just remixes of Total Eclips of the Heart...still makes me laugh my ass off when it pops up.

Was Forest's son even really his or did Jenny cuck a mentally retarded man as one last grimy move before she died?

Maury confirmed he was the father and went on to say that Forrest was the only guy dumb enough to go in raw on a whore with aids.

I've only seen a few little snippets and that was enough for me. I'm sure if i was made to sit and watch it i'd start projectile vomiting.

to me, it's one of the greatest american movies of all-time. one of tom hanks' best performances. in fact, he's one of the most underrated actors of all-time, with everyone seemingly placing daniel day lewis as the goat. i personally think it's sean penn, but that's neither here nor there. anyway, forrest gump is a classic movie.
