Finnegan's Wake

Strongman is something I've thought about. I'll get a couple fights in, and see where I'm at from there. Thanks for the compliments.
If I get squirrly this summer, I may order a mold or two.

MMA:
1 1/2 hours

Warmup:
some combo work on "Bob", elbows, knees, etc
shrimping
medicine ball putting/ flurry on bag

Grappling:
Reviewed (Did 4 times each technique in the series)
leg lock series
armbar series
triangle choke series

Techniques
Teepee while in triangle. I like this a lot. Drilled this 20 times or so.
Bolt Lock from triangle. Drilled 20.
Knee Bar from Side Mount (when they bring the leg up to defend mount one

Rolling:
6 three minute rounds, rotated between three people

Highlights: Lots of good sweeps, got another Anaconda choke, got some decent leg trip takedowns/ stuffed a few.

Lowlights: My core strength was, basically, not there. Got swept a couple times, had to fight off RNC for nearly an entire round.

Impressions:
OVerall, a decent night. Not really much to say. I'm putting together a strength program for a couple of guys.

Finny my present for you was going to be a 225 Zercher DL vid (10lb pr) and the music was the tribal music you sent me. But it says "Invalid Format"

Can't wait for your first fight man! Good luck and congrats on your PR!

Rd 2: 200 lbs Sandbag Get Up
X 2 (PR)
I haven't played with a sandbag this heavy before on get-ups, but do you find this constitutes enough reps for a conditioning workout? I mean, I'd just feel stapled to the ground the whole time and don't even know if I'd get my heart rate up enough to call it conditioning. It's an impressive feat nonetheless, if for no other reason than your sandbag weighs more than I do.

OH yeah, its condtioning. I'm just strong enough to keep active under the thing and be constantly trying to get up. At the end of the round, I feel like I just grappled.

MMA:
2 hours

Mit Work:
Worked w/ a guy on his basic combos for three rounds.

Rolling:
5 three minute rounds

Highlights:
Got a gullotine. Maintained top control for most rounds (except against a new guy who showed up. Really good wrestler.) Close triangle.
Lowlights: Spent a whole round on my back against the new wrestler. Had to fight off a tight triangle for awhile.

MMA Demo:
The school was doing demos for the local youth shelter, so they did the karate, Wing Tsun, etc.
I rolled w/ my instructor in a "tit for tat" submission/ position demo.

MMA Sparring:
For the final demo, we geared up and did two three minute MMA spars w/ the Truth gloves. I did really well on striking, landed a good uppercut, stuffed a takedown, worked some GnP, etc.
Round two, I worked the low kick more and doubled up my jab (it worked just fine) and some body shots. Got taken down w/ an ankle pick and the the round ended w/ me fighting off a kimura from half guard.

Impressions:
Did okay today. Def. need to spar w/ the smaller gloves more. Class is being restructured to have two days a week of "General MMA" and one day of "MMA Fight Team" training, w/ open mats as the unofficial second fight team day.
Got offered a fight in March, the weekend after Naga. I'm going to have to turn it down since I'll be without insurance if I get this new job.

One other thing of note:
Wing Tsun guy from the vids offered a challenge to the kids "See if any of you can take me down and hold me there." The kid he chose would have made Bubble Boy proud, as the first thing he did was a beautiful judo hip toss w/ some Japanese name I don't know. When they got back up, he nearly suplexed him, but settled for a pick up/ leg trip takedown from the back. The kid couldn't hold him down, but he tossed the shit out of him.
Hopefully, he'll start coming to class.

Impressions:
Felt good tonight as far the SOHP went. Couldn't hit the groove on bench. every set pissed me off, then I remembered I was benching w/ a bent bar. I switched bars (my spare is noticably thinner as well. I don't trust it for anything over 300. Luckily, I don't press anything over that currently, so I don't really have to worry too much.
I'm probably going to get a Jesup bar this summer.

Gear Purchased: Belly Pad, leather double end bag, focus mits (all Top Contender). With the possibility of a fight coming up faster than I thought, I took the liberty of purchasing a new leather DE bag and am going to donate my old one to the school, as the owner is a bit hesitant to spend money on the MMA program right now. The other stuff I got so I can train outside of class.

You'll be happy with my finny, i bought this creatine and it has the almighty beta-alanine in it as well. I think it has some NO in it too.

Recovery here i come!

I've been meaning to ask, whats your fight style/general gameplan for a fight?

I'm mainly a counter-striker. I like low kicks, esp to the lead leg, and jabs. Up close, I like dirty boxing and the clinch with plenty of knees.
On the ground, I prefer GnP from side control. I don't like mount at all for anything. I would rather work subs from half gaurd or mount than full gaurd or full mount(kimuras, americanas, and kneebars).

How I would like to win: Zercher slam the shit out my opponent for as long as it takes. Submission (slam) is what I want it to read.

edit: gameplan would depend on the opponent, but in general I would want to cause a lot of damage to the legs and the left eye region the first round and stuff takedowns. Second round I'd be more aggressive. Third round would be a non stop onslaught. If it is only two rounds, make the full onslaught round the second round.

Oh, and be sure to carb load the Creatine/ BA. It does wonders for its effectiveness.

great workout.

so what's the verdict on the weight class for the fight? werent u planning to drop to 205?

I just watched your Deadlift, great lift!!!!

How many fights have you had finnegan?

DS: Yeah, I still plan to drop to 205. I could fight at HW, but I'd be a fairly small one.
Brad: Thanks. It was a nice endnote to the year. As far as fights go, I've yet to have any. This would be my debut. I've been in a few tussles in my time though.

The promoters for this event in particular seem okay. They are cops for one, so that eliminates a lot of the worries. They demand a physical and a clean blood test, too. Completely amatuer, no one w/ more than one fight, etc.

What weight would you be if you fought at HW and what is your height?

The amatuer show sounds decent!

That's a stupid challenge. The Judo creed is "The hardest thing you can hit your opponent with is the ground". So by repeatedly getting tossed on his ass, neck and cranium, he proved nothing. Score one for the Judo guy, zero for captain carate.

BTW,
I feel sorry for the man that enters the ring/octagon with you. I'd wish you luck, but you don't need it.
