GSP was not in his prime when he lost to Hughes, nor was he in his prime when he beat Penn the first time. GSP had a lot to overcome mentally, and both losses lead to the monster who crushed Hughes in their third fight, Serra in their second fight, and Penn in their second fight.

This is correct.

He learned from his losses and became a better fighter.

He wasn't prime as champ or when fighting for the championship......

You know when Fedor lost.... after 10 years undefeated and over 30 fights. And yeah, we're ignoring the rule-based decision with TK just like I would the rule-based decision against Jones.

He is no doubt hw best record wise. My only issue is that I can't see anyone matching it now....Cain and Werdum and Cigano are all capable of winning. Bigfoot, and several others could surprise you. In Fedors day it was him, Cc, and Nog. And really it was just him. Not to mention no hw champ would be allowed to fight cans anymore. I say he will have best record forever.

I mean, HWs are hardly allowed to fight anymore period. The consistency which Fedor fought hardly happens anymore (injuries were his only real delays). That's why the can argument fall flat for me. Essentially Cain and Fedor fought top talent at nearly the same pace.... but Fedor had no-win-situation fights in between.

Doubt it. The number of athletes competing in MMA will be significantly higher than when MMA was a young sport, and MMA athletes will continue to evolve, becoming more well rounded and better skilled. It's not impossible but it will be a lot tougher to repeat what Fedor did

True but that was PRIDES Achilles. One thing the UFC has done a better job of is contender fights. HMC , Sapp etc would never get title fights today

not only was the sport young but people were still very much figuring out how it worked back then. you still got guys that had no striking, or no wrestling, or no ground game. the women nowadays are learning from the same up-to-date trainers as the guys. back then was the stone age.

he was a pioneer and he had an incredible run, but it was a totally different sport back then. if you actually watch the fights from back then, a lot of them were complete garbage full of loads of stalling and waiting around.

you see, even though they may be learning more advanced technique (and lol at that anyway...MMA is not much different now than 10 years ago).....their talent pool is still insanely small compared to when Fedor was fighting because their are so few women who actually compete in combat sports

men came into MMA during Fedor's era with legit martial arts backgrounds

Honda is fighting Bethe Corriea who was an accounting student and not even training 3 1/2 years ago

awful

If you dont see the diffrence in MMA in the last 10 years you are a little bit biased towards "the good old times"

Fedor never once claimed to be the best, or even to be unbeatable (even when he was undefeated he said he could lose just like any man).

Please note of this great man's humility, and stop with the need to argue for him being the best. That's beneath Fedor. He's a good man who has earned the respect of all his peers.

That's worth much more than all these subjective rankings and fantasy time-travel match-ups.

Fedor is also the fighter who spent the most consecutive days ranked as #1 in any weight class in MMA history.

GOAT

Indeed... but Fedor was in a sport coming up with a splintered class and a monopolized hype machine. He beat the contemporaries from UFC when they were in Affliction, even as he was leaving his prime. But he did fill time with cans, mostly because in Japan the fans wanted to see it and the company obliged. Also because they wanted him working rather than sitting (like Cain).

I don't begrudge the quality of GSP, Anderson, or Jones as some of the best of all time. I'd just never put him in front of Fedor. Aldo is the one guy I could see eclipsing him. But it's hard to do due to heightest and zyGOAT fans.

The HW division is just tough man. Everyone is huge and one punch can end anyone's night. One moment of hesitation and you find someone with their arms around your neck choking the life out of you. The HW division is no joke! There is a reason why a lot of people cut weight and fight at LHW instead.

If you defended the HW belt for over a year you are incredibly talented. If you held it for nearly a decade, you are the stuff of legends. Fedor is a legend.

And don´t forget that Fedor is a small LHW. That make his winning more Epic.
