Fedor BY far beat the most cans.

I missed Haters´s tears. lol

1) Yeah (see #4)

2) You want Consensus, Nick Diaz ranked top 5 by Sherdog, MMA Junkie, ESPN, Globo, MMA Torch (and top 15 P4P)

3) BJ Penn, the 2nd fight (LW), is NOT counted; that's why I didn't cross him out like the others that you had wrong

4) Repeating #1 from above... Yeah. Randy Couture, for example, was never Consensus #1 HW in the world, so he doesn't make this thread... but Randy was Ranked #1 HW by some Ranking Orgs at some point in his career here and there. He still gets that credit, so to speak.

5) Cherry-picking would imply nefarious, intentional deceptiveness or something. All this is, is what I gathered from the Internet Archive database -- particularly the Ranking Org sources from the early days. Jeff Sherwood was "just a fan" when he created Sherdog.com. Stephen Quadros was one of the earliest published MMA media member, he wrote a colmn for Black Belt Magazine staring back in 1999. But go ahead and pooh-pooh the Ranking Orgs, just know that no fighter gets any special treatment, no "cherry-picking."

I didnt have them wrong. Claiming someone is top 5 when only 1 out of 5 publications have them listed as such is misleading.

Karo for example is listed as being ranked #10, #10, #9, #8, #4 and you still include that as a "top 5 opponent".
Sherk is listed at #8, #8, #5, #5, #4. Still listed as top 5.
Dan Hardy is listed as #6, #4, #6, #6, #8. Still listed as top 5.

Not to mention I dont even think half of these MMA ranking sites even consider Japanese MMA.

-Nick Diaz ranked at #4 but he's never beaten anyone in the top 5 ever?
-Pete Spratt is ranked (although his averaged ranking would be 5.4 so he shouldnt technically make the list either) because of winning via fluke injury over Lawler. Before Lawler he was finished in less than 2 minutes by Newton, and after Lawler, was finished 3x in a row, two of them under a minute. Saying he was top 5 at the time is silly shit.
-Dan Hardy was 4-0 in the UFC at the time, but not one win was against at top 5 opponent.

Nah, monopoly is still the GOAT of being an utterly shit game.
Play as the banker, and act like a real banker. It's fun, alright - but your friends and family who play with you may hate you afterwards.

...

He spent the first half of his career fighting nobodies in Japan. Then he moved on to fight slightly above average fighters and even lost to Dan Henderson

Good fighter no doubt, but greatest of all time? Jon Jones is more deserving

Fedor fought a lot of less than stellar opponents in Japan, which padded his record. He did beat some UFC fighters outside of the UFC and before they joined the UFC. So that does help his case a bit. Certainly would have been nice to see him fight some fighters in their prime. DC would have out wrestled him. Miocic would have been a really good match up. Lesnar would have been interesting but I think Fedor would have TKO'd him. Prime Randy Couture would have been good as well as prime Ken Shamrock and Dan Severne. Cain Velasquez right after the Lesnar fight would have been really hard for Fedor too. Sadly we'll never know now.

You can’t be serious about Shamrock, Severn, and Couture.

Stipe and Cain would have been interesting fights for sure. Brock would have been a fun spectacle, but not close.

How do you explain the average age of the TOP 5 HW's being 34.2? Are you saying none of those guys are in their primes? Same age Fedor was when he lost

That's a weak HW division where there is literally few prospects.

In the deeper divisions, the average age of top fighters is much much lower.

I'm not saying that they would have won. But those guys were some big strong dudes. Fedor wouldn't exactly rag doll any of them. He would of had to work hard for the wins. Re-watch the Shamrock/Severne fight. Not the most technical by any means back then, but the sheer power they were pushing on each other respectable. Couture on the other hand had good wrestling and developed some pretty sneaky good dirty boxing later on.

Fedor is the greatest of all time. He would fight anybody. I think the 2002-2006 Fedor is the greatest fighter I've ever seen. His sub and tko ratio are almost identical. He could do whatever he wants. I thought it was funny when the UFC were propping Cain up to be the greatest. He has no sub game. My black belt is more legitimate.

Fedor won the world HW championship in Pride FC and won his next 18 STRAIGHT FIGHTS while beating the likes of Mirko, Nog,AA,Syliva, Hunt, Coleman and Randleman in that span.

18 title defenses.

GOAT.

Will anyone ever beat that?

Historic look at every Consensus #1 Heavyweight in the world and their reign; based on MMA Rankings complied dating back to the late 1990s. Before Mark Kerr, there weren't many Ranking Org, nor was there a "consensus" until around December of 1998.

The write-ups included are from the Rankings Orgs at the time (from that month) the fighter took over the Consensus #1 Ranking.

Mark Kerr -- 0 years, 11 months

HW - 1998 - Dec 5? - Domingo's NHB Rankings
1. Mark Kerr - Mark Kerr is possibly the most destructive force in NHB fighting today. He is/was an Olympic caliber wrestler (he tied with Coleman in '92), plus he has adapted well with various submissions, strikes, and positions from BJJ as well as Muay Thai. Kerr's wins of note came over: Paul Varelans, Maestre Hulk, Fabio Gurgel, Dan Bobish and Duane Cason. Kerr defeated Branko Cikatic via disqualification at Pride-2, "The" Pedro at Pride-3, and Hugo Duarte at Pride-4. Kerr is the most active top tier fighter in the biz right now, and his competition has been good for the most part. The current rumor mill has him facing Vovchanchin at Pride-5.

He owns the best record in the over-200-pounds category and is the winner of five eight-man NHB tournaments. At 5 feet 6 inches and 235 pounds, he is a small guy with a big punch.

Brock Lesnar -- 0 years, 4 months

HW - 2010 - Jul 6 - L.A. Times MMA/Todd Martin
1. Brock Lesnar - It was a chaotic month for heavyweight MMA, highlighted by the surprising submission defeat of the great Fedor Emelianenko and a wild UFC title fight between Brock Lesnar and Shane Carwin. Lesnar now reigns as the heavyweight division's best. Velasquez and Dos Santos will be the next challengers for the UFC heavyweight title. Werdum skyrockets up the rankings but Fedor may have the chance to redeem himself and avenge that loss.

Cain Velasquez -- 1 year, 1 month (1st stint)

HW - 2010 - Oct 29 - Bloody Elbow-USAToday Consensus
1. Cain Velasquez - 98 (UFC)
Obviously the epic news this month is the rise of #1 Cain Velasquez after his demolition of #2 Brock Lesnar at UFC 121. He'll defend his title against #5 Junior dos Santos in early 2011.

Junior Cigano -- 1 year, 1 month

HW - 2011 - Nov 22 - Sherdog
1. JUNIOR DOS SANTOS (14-1) Despite suffering a serious knee injury only 11 days prior, dos Santos did on Nov. 12 what no heavyweight before him could: stop Cain Velasquez. Now perched atop the ranks as the MMA world's best big man, "Cigano" may undergo surgery before defending his UFC title against the winner of Dec. 30's Brock Lesnar-Alistair Overeem clash.

Cain Velasquez -- 2 years, 6 months (2nd stint; 3 yrs, 7 mos)

HW - 2013 - Jan 15 - ESPN
1. Cain Velasquez - It was a hard paddle back to face JDS, and this time he wasn't going to squander anything. Velasquez looked as good as he ever has. The question now is: Can he be the dominant heavyweight champion that sustains?

Fabricio Werdum -- 0 years, 11 months

HW - 2015 - Jun 16 - MMA Junkie/USAToday
1. Fabricio Werdum - Fabricio Werdum looked downright fantastic in his UFC 188 win over Cain Velasquez. As the man who also beat Fedor Emelianenko, is Werdum the greatest heavyweight of all time?

Stipe Miocic -- 1 years, 2 months...

HW - 2016 - May 15 - Sherdog

1. Stipe Miocic (15-2) -It has been 52 years since the city of Cleveland had any kind of major sports championship, but in front of 45,000 Brazilian fans in Curitiba, Miocic snapped that streak by taking Fabricio Werdum’s UFC heavyweight championship with a beautiful right hook. The Strong Style Fight Team product is now staring down the barrel of challenges from the likes of Cain Velasquez, Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem in his first potential title defense.

3 Win vs Top 10 Ranked Opponents (HW+) in that span

note: Before Mark Kerr there was no real "consensus" as to who was #1; based on the archived rankings I've gathered.
